Need Help Installing Lift

So the Toytec part of my order shipped today, and I have my Tundra coils, so it's about that time to beg for help installing all of this. Im looking at:

F/R shocks and springs - including assembly of the fronts
Diff drop
Possibly sway bar bushings

There are some other things that if people have the experience and would want to help that would be great, but if not, I can do them on my own (maybe).

These include:
valve cover gasket,
rear diff breather
deckplate/isr mod

Of course all the beer you can drink and all the ____ you can eat is on me. And if you want some cash too I can do that, just trying to not get robbed by a shop. Located in SLO, but have family down in SD up in Santa Cruz and SF, so anyone anywhere could help.

I would help if I were closer.. I loved putting my lift on! Hope someone nearby helps out.

The diff breather, ISR, and deckplate can all be done together in under an hour by yourself.

Only advice I have is to use wd-40 or pb blaster on all nuts and blots every day starting a week before the install. Be sure to get the upper mount for the rear shocks, those are notorious for being seized during install. Me and countless others have had to use a sawzall to get the rear shocks out.
An auto shop may be willing to assemble the front spring/shock for you, I hear $40 or so is average price for that. They have some crazy fancy automatic spring compressors.

Best of luck! Pics when yer done!

Can't help you out, but I will be in the same boat as you in the future. Are you going to Cal Poly or Cuesta? I just graduated from poly a year ago and moved back home to Santa Cruz.

Going to Poly. 4th year in Construction Management. My cousin lives in Soquel.

Nice, I had a few friends in the engineering department, but not in construction. I may know your cousin, but probably not. Good luck with the build. Looking forward to seeing how it comes out.

Andrew Murphy. Hes pretty new to the area. Big into cafe bikes and old scooters if you are, you might know him

Yeah, I dont have a hole saw or a dremel to do the deckplate, and I am waiting for my lift to see how long I need to make my diff breather line. But the isr, I dont need help for that.

cafe racers rock, love the old bikes, as for getting them assembled at a shop before hand, i don't think that's going to work unless you got new top plates as well, as you typically reuse these with the new set-up, that said if you do have new top plates i'd still just go and get some spring compressors then you have the tool if you ever need to do this again or change anything,

i went through 3 differant kinds of spring compressors on my install, trying to find the easiest one to use and that did the best job,

first i used these,

they sucked the hooks are hard to get into the coils you can't always get the hooks on the coils you like due to the thickness of the hooks and the tight wraps of the coils and they broke before the coil was compressed enough to get the top plate on. granted they were harbour freight brand for only $9.99 but still wasn't as easy to maneuver, honestly kind of scary becuase it's hard to get the perfect purchase on them and squared to each other on either side.

next i used these, same thing hard to get a good hold of the coil and the hooks where much to large for the front coils, i shaved down the hooks to fit in coil but was still awkward, these maybe very good for the rear coils but for the fronts, no bueno ,

lastly i used these, and they were great, due to the way they go on they will never slip off and you can lay the coil on a work bench then put these on either side of the coil flat and square to each other with ease, not to mention you can pick any wrap you want and hook on to it from there, so when your pulling the coil down everything is nice and even and square.
my only concern is that the hooks or u-bolts might be a little flimsy depends on the grade of it, i know personally after taking 3 hours with fighting with the other kinds of spring compressors just to get the front in i was able to pull, disassemble and reassemble and re-install one of the front coils in about 45 minutes a side from start to finish. honestly it just made the job so much easier using these small little things....

on the last one it has little u-bolts that go through the coil and you just tighten the main bolt head to compress, one problem i was having was the other spring compressors besides these would get bound up on the upper shock boot or cover once you tried to put the coil over the shock and screw on the top plate.

another thing that will speed up the install is just undo this thing

then undo these 4 bolts (front view)

this will allow for the lower control arm to drop way way down, next put the coil assy in and loosely screw in the top of the shock assy or screw in the top plate loosely, then just put your foot on the lower a arm and push down until this bolt swings into place

then pin it, it works best with a buddy so he can push harder or not so hard until that hole lines up, once you got that bolt in tighten everything up on the shock assy get a floor jack and jack up the part that has the 4 bolts on it to the bottom of the rotor assy and reinstall those 4 bolts and then reinstall everything else and you should be good to go...

this is a very easy job if you got the right tools and a clear way of doing it, i gotta thank brian2sun for the 4 bolt trick, it easily made the job 70% easier to complete, it was one of those things as well, were he kept telling people to just drop those bolts and got ignored or at least not replied to about, so i decided to give it a try after hours of fighting and cursing, and between that little tip and the right spring compressors the job was a snap, i would not think a second about doing this again now.

you got a great support group even if we can't be there in person, just hope on here and say help asap! and i'm sure guys will dive right in to give you a hand, i know they did with me when i was sitting at the tire shop yesterday ;-)

wow izzard, thanks for all of that. I think you're right in that I could probably try it myself, and of course if I got help Id be getting my hands dirty just as much as everyone else, I would just feel more comfortable if I had someone who has done it a time or two to help out ya know?

oh yeah no worries if it didn't take me 24 hours of straight driving to get down to you i would be there man! lol

maybe post another thread in the clubs section for California

Where did you get these? How much $? I forgot to install my trim packer and now the driver side sits almost .5" lower than passenger. Time to do the entire thing over again...

Performance Tool Strut Coil Spring Compressor, Model# W80555 | Specialty Tools | Northern Tool + Equipment

i got mine for $40 at the local autozone with a lifetime warranty

i'm sorry man that sucks, try it out with the instructions above and i promise there isn't an easier way to do it, i'm an old man in a kids body, i'm 29 and have a very bad back and neck from a hockey accident, so since then i've learned to work smart and not hard, by doing it the way above even my girl could wrestle these things in.

I'm in the same boat as you except I'm waiting until my twin bro is home over thanksgiving break to help me out. I wish there were some other people on here close buy...it would be awesome to do a group lift install

sucks guys, if you come to Seattle i'll give you a hand ;-)

try posting these in the regional section of the forum,

so cal

So Cal - Toyota - 4Runner . org Forum

texas
Texas & Oklahoma - Toyota - 4Runner . org Forum

they aren't as used as much as these are but you have a better chance of getting some local help

so in the 3rd gen part of the forum more people will see you need help but will be un able to do anything about it

and in the regional area less people will see that you need help but more of them will be able to help you

:thumb3:

actually there are a ton of us in the 3rd gen. section from So Cal. a few of us go help each other out with various installs.

PBColt- if you were willing to drive up to Moreno Valley or OC I am sure a couple of us to help out. If you have the garage space and tools at your place in SD we might even be able to caravan down there to help. Let us know some dates.

Hey Pikeman, thats great to hear! OC or Moreno Valley wouldnt be that far of a stretch at all. I wouldnt want to ask you guys to drive down to SD just to help me, I could make the trip to you guys. As far as dates, toytec just shipped my stuff today, so I dont know how long that takes. After I get it, whenever works best for you guys works for me. Ill just take a weekend, drive from SLO to OC, stop, lift, then continue on to SD

:iagree: just a week ago shoke came over to my place in buena park and we installed his lift, diff drop, and constant power to power outlet mod. I am on call this coming weekend but the following Sunday I might be able to help out.

Thanks driffter! I know the weekend of Nov 12-14 we have off school. Maybe that could work?

Brian2sun, proudrunner, and I also have lilskips gas tank skids on order and should be coming sometime between now and then 3 tank skids and a lift would be a heck of a mod party lol that would require a grill master as well.
