Need Help on Tweeter Replacement

Need help from all you car audio gurus here. So after how many moons ago of changing my stock stereo system with aftermarket equipment, my Diamond Audio tweeter on the driver's side is finally going out. I'm starting to have distortion with certain songs being played.

So my question is this, can I just replace my Diamond Audio tweeters or do I have to replace my whole component setup? Right now I'm currently running some Phoenix Gold TI series midrange speakers on the doors and Diamond Audio tweeters with a I can't remember the wattage on the Phoenix Gold amp and another Phoenix Gold Octane R amp running my JL Audio sub. I've talked to several car audio installation shops already and a few say I can replace just the tweeters and the others say I have to replace the whole component system.

Also do you guys have any suggestions on what comparable tweeters I can replace my current ones with? Thanks.

yes you can just replace the tweeters BUT are you happy with the sound of the system? if not you might want to replace it with a higher quality JL components speaker system like the C5s or C3s depending on your budget that would definitely would be a nice upgrade ...also since your tweeters are going are they crossover correctly? and is the amp set to the correct sensitivity ? or you may end up with the same problem shortly after

Thanks for your input. Those speakers that you mentioned are just a bit out of my price range at the moment. Recently just upgraded my wife's Sequoia's sound system and she won't be thrilled w/ me spending that amount on my ride. Plus, I'm happy w/ the system I have in place.

As far as if my tweeters are crossover correctly that I'm not too sure. I've had these tweeters when it was first installed 13-14 years ago. I can tell you that my amp are Phoenix Gold Octane R 5.0.4. Hope that helps.

ok to be clear are your speakers components speakers (midbass and tweeters with a crossover) or are you running full range 6-1/2 speakers in your doors with tweeters in the dash? if the later you need a inline crossover on the tweeter...just making sure your setup is correct ...a couple other options on the tweeters that are less expensive ...your amp is fine... you have a subwoofer? or can you link me the door speakers you have?

I'm going to have to get back to you on the speakers. As far as I know, it should be a midbass and tweeters. But I'll have to double check. I know that the installers used different speakers and tweeters in my system. I know I'm running Diamond Audio tweeters and Phoenix Gold speakers.

As for my sub, I'm running Phoenix Gold Octane R 2.0.2 amp to run my sub. I know that my sub isn't that powerful but just wanted something to run my sub at the time and didn't have a lot of cash at the time to upgrade
 
Yeah it sounds like you don't have components setup that come with a crossover network... so just make sure when you get new tweeters they have a inline crossover (most do) then make sure your sensitivity on the amp isn't set to high on tweeters and you should be fine ... over driving them will burn them up especially without a crossover point

Thanks for your help. Question, if I decide to just go ahead and switch out the whole front speaker setup w/ a whole new component system, can my amp, which is rated at 50 RMS, handle a midrange speaker rated at 70 RMS and above or should I look for a speaker component system that's rated at 50 RMS? Just want to make sure I purchase the right speakers and not blow it right out of the box.

Thanks for your help. I decided to just purchase the NVX VSP65KIT component system. I'm on a budget right now after just recently upgrading my wife's sound system and stereo in her Sequoia. Wifey would've killed me spending more money, especially since I'm thinking of upgrading my son's Honda sound system and stereo sometime next year.

cool no problem man, glad to help actually the build quality looks pretty good on those components you bought for the money,let me know how they sound once you get then in .. when you get ready to do a system in son's Honda PM me i can help you out i just put a killer JL system in my Honda Civic coupe EX-L and man it sounds great ...i use the Civic for a commuter car via 34 to 45 mpg compared to my modded out Toyota FJ at 12-14 mpg lol

have you heard anything beside jl audio? they make good subs i know, amps they are fine, speakers are so so to me.
used to own 300/4, it sounded good, then i doubled the power and used 2 300/2, sounded better. ran this for couple of years, then switched to rockford fosgate t600-2 and t400-2, made my speakers came more alive with the extra power. had the 500/1 for each sub, then made that swap to a t1000bdcp, talk about 3 times more power and the same size as 1 jl amp. replaced the one i hide in the cargo storage.

So here are some pics of the install of my new NVX component speakers.

After removing my door panel, I had Phoenix Gold Octane R 6" coaxial speakers w/ 1" Diamond Audio tweeters connected to a passive crossover in both front doors.

When my installer removed the speaker, we found out that the new speakers mounting depth was too big for the stock speaker housing and was hitting the windows. The previous installers just used my stock speaker housing and glued the new speakers on the old housing and made new holes to attach the screws and speakers in. So at this point I was kind of bummed that I couldn't install it last week. I was ready to throw in the towel and send these speakers back but decided to go contact car-speaker-adapters.com and purchase a set of speaker adapters specifically made for my 4runner. After talking to him, I purchased the speakers and w/in a week, my new adapters and spacers came in. I take it to my installer and after removing the speakers and old adapter, he attached the new adapter bracket. He put foam tape on the back side of the adapter that attaches to the metal door frame, then attaches the 1/4 spacer to the bracket using PVC cement. He then puts more foam tape on top of the spacer before attaching the speaker to the adapter. He drills a couple of holes in the metal door frame to attach the passive crossovers before installing the tweeters in the stock tweeter location. Last picture just shows my two speakers, the Phoenix Gold Octane R 6" coax and the NVX 6.5" mid.

It actually sounds way better than my old set up. The clarity is way better than my Phoenix Golds coax and Diamond Audio tweeters. Granted the bass on these speakers aren't as good compared to my old PG coaxials. I don't know if I have to break them in but I did read from the reviews that the bass on the mids wasn't all that great so I was expecting that. Besides I have a sub to handle the bass.

All in all, I am very impressed with these speakers especially for the price point. $90 before taxes and still less than a $100 after taxes, plus they threw in a free 25 ft OFC 12 gauge wire. Will definitely buy another set of NVX speakers when I decide to upgrade my rear speakers
 
You might try some tuning to get more low end out of them plus sound deadening the doors would help a lot
 
Yeah just did a little more fine tuning of the stereo and the bass started to pick up but then the rattling started. So i had to kinda retune again to lower the bass so as not to rattle my damn doors. Never realized how much bass I was missing w/ my old coaxials and how much more powerful these NVX 6.5s are compared to my old PG 6" speakers.

Now here I go spending more money to buy sound deadening which I was hoping not to do. My wife is really going to kill when she sees my credit card bill lol.

On a side note, do you have any experience w/ the sound deadening product called Noico? Bought it in Amazon for $63 for 36 sq ft. Can't purchase the more expensive Dynamat and definitely can't splurge on SDS tiles.
