need help on wheel replacement!!!

This is starting to get to me... I bought a 2004 4runner 4x4 v6 a few weeks ago. it has 20" wheels & 265-50x20 street tires which don't do off road very well at all. so i wanted to change them out.

here is the pain...

I bought a set of FJ Cruiser 17" w/ 265-70x17 but they don't fit!! the inside diameter of the wheel is 4.16" and the center hub (i don't know what it's called) is 4.26" (front and rear)!!

i figure it might be because the different model vehicles... so i went and bought a set of 2007 4Runner 2x4 factory wheels. they don't fit either!! same problem.

just to be sure, i remove the 'original' spare from underneath... it doesn't fit either!!! same problem!! i thought it might be the original owner replaced the rotor or bearing or something so i went to Kragen's to check.

Here is the kicker the girl behind the counter laughed and told me the 4x4 wheels are different from the 2x4 wheels because the 'hub's contail 4x4 electronics.

is this true? if so, it's been a heck of an education for the past 2 days.

For starters.

Factory specs: 4WD
17 inch whees 17x7.5
offset +30mm
bolt pattern 6x139.7mm
centerbore 108mm


What type of FJ wheels did you get? The 4WD FJ wheels should fit a 4Runner. (FJ has slightly different offset but its negligible)

do you mean 4x4 wheels are different then 2x4 wheels?

sorry, I have no info on a 4x2 wheel. 4x2's are not sold where I live. What model 4Runner do you have? SR5, SE, LTD?

Why not tell us the model you have and post some pictures? The FJ should have fit. If you have the SE model then 16" rims will not fit (SE brakes are larger). I believe the 4x2 wheels are same as the 4x4.

2004, 4Runner SR5 4x4 - model 8664A (from the sticker).

2007 4Runner 16" wheels don't fit.
2007 FJ Cruisers 17" wheels don't fit.

I went to the dealer this morning trying to figure it out. the service manager came out and told me he had the same problem with this 2004 4Runner 2x4. Only a set of Tacoma TRD 17" wheels fit his car. same wheels on some 4Runner Limited.

problem solved.

There were plastic rings around the base of the hubs increasing the diameter of the hub. the rust covered the edges so i couldn't see them. Removed them and now both 17" FJ Cruiser and 16" 4Runner factory wheels both fit.

also, the 17" wheels/tires is 1 size larger (265-70x17) but clears the fenders just fine. Although off the line feels a little slower or less torquie. The ride is a lot more quieter and smooth handling. I don't feel every crack on the road any longer.

I'll see what happens with the fuel economy. thanks guys!!
