Need Help Repairing My Pin Stripe!

Hey guys, so this has been bugging me for awhile,
but somehow the pinstripe on my passenger door got
ruined. It's been like that for a couple years and now i
really want to fix it. Is there a place online where i
can order the pinstripe to match? How do i peel the pinstripe
off the door and replace it without ruining the paint? Thanks!

Personally, I know mine was done by hand, so buying one online isn't really an option I have as it was hand done.
Do you know if yours was hand done or if it was some sort of sticker with clear coat over it?

I didn't know that mine was hand-done til I was by an auto repair shop and the guy commented on the pinstriping. Just my .02

Oh, no my pinstripe was put there when the car was built. It's not aftermarket or anything.
I thought it would be an easy replacement. I don't even know how this happened and i dont
know why the picture is so huge (sorry bout that) but now i can see little scratches from this pic.
It looks like someone did this on purpose

Mine came with a factory pin stripe as well. I hated it and though it looked cheap so i spent about an hour a day for two weeks peeling if of and using goo gone to make sure it looked perfect. Hope this helps.

thanks for replying! i was thinking of removing it completely but it doesnt look that bad on the silver runner. If i cant figure out a way to fix this i might just remove it then...

Your best bet would be just to remove it, unless you want to pay someone to paint it back on by hand. take it off and just live with it i reckon. GL.

I would think you could just remove the pinstriping on that door & a body shop should be able to get you a roll of pinstriping with the same color & pattern. You may have to buy way more pinstriping than you need just to get the door re-done (a full roll), and there may be a slight color difference if the striping on your Runner has faded over time. Other than that, it should be pretty straightforward I suppose.

The pin striping is not a factory option and most likely installed at port. Check with your dealer. They can probably get it from the distributor.

I believe the distributor for Texas is Gulf States Toyota. Similar to Southeast Toyota (SET), they primarily order all their 4Runners one way and add to them when they arrive at port.

Most of the 4th gens distributed by GS and SET will have Liquidcell leather in the Sport Edition or SR5 models and the spoiler installed is similar to the one by Spoiler Depot. The 3rd brake light is not on the face of the spoiler but the underside. There was also an "XSP" edition 4Runner that was available in Southern region of the US, either from GST or SET.

all good advice so far guys... I should probably mention that i've had this 4runner since 2004 so i'm afraid that if i remove the pinstripe altogether it will leave a discolored stripe behind. Thats why i've been trying to figure out how to repair it instead.

Clean the area where the damaged portion of the pin stripe is thoroughly. Is there any noticeable fading?

I saw a white 2nd gen Tacoma with the TRD Sport package. It was very noticeable where the TRD Sport sticker use to be on the bedside. Hopefully, it's not bad on your 4Runner.

Easy fix. When I put "pin stripes" on estimates for work, we pay $15 plus about $15 to install...have you checked at Autozone? Some of those type store sell pin stripe rolls ready to peel and stick on. I promise you can find the same color online or at a local store.

How to: Peel the old on off or use an "eraser" type disc you can pick up a napa. Degrease and stick it on! Start on the edge of the door, line up w/ the old one on the next panel. Then with slight tension, peel the backing off. Hold out a feet and you can push towards the frt of the door and it will help keep everything straight...hope that makes sense.

just go to a local bodyshop. they can fix it while you wait easily. they can also match the color perfectly. 3m makes the stripes, please do not go and try to buy a roll. a bodyshop probably wont even charge you and if they do it would only be a few dollars. you have two different stripes on there the top one is 72363 and the lower one is 72002.

I have a similar situation on my '04, but I'd like to just ditch the striping altogether. I've heard that WD-40 is a good adhesive remover (nice to hear that it's good for something ), but is it safe to use on the paint? Anyone ever try it?

This is what I used when I worked in a shop.

Using the 3M Stripe Off Wheel (eraser wheel) 2007.5 Chevrolet 2500HD Silverado Lifted on Cognito - YouTube

Its called a 3M adhesive eraser. They run about 25-30 bucks but work very well.
When you remove the stripe the area under the stripe is typically shinier than the rest of the paint, so you may see a ghost image.
It will only be slightly noticeable on a silver finish.
You can easily polish the area and it will blend together.

As for re-striping with the tape-type striping, its not extremely difficult but it does take some attention to detail to get it straight along the body lines
and to make the cuts at each section. You also need to bring the stripes to a point at the leading edge of the fender. Id probably leave them off and call it good.

Stripe kits and the eraser can be purchased at a good auto parts store or a body shop supplier.
