Sounds like a great starting point in the quest to diagnose your 4runner. Although, someone else also suggested that even then, it's always a great idea to get a second opinion.

haha no worries, i know it's not you personally, you just don't know any better and that's fine, it's just the info is all over the map right now is all i'm saying, good luck with the trans guy, let us know what he has to say and just keep grilling him on why he thinks this happened and what exactly is wrong....

but to tell the truth the guy isn't going to do anything more then what you may have already done, he's going to drive it,check the fluid for smell,color,thickness and for particles..... as with a transmission there's not much you can really check without pulling it and cracking it open, it's more about how it's behaving then any real diagnosis work...so make sure you have grilled him enough that your confident in him and his answer, as if there is something wrong with it, it's a very expensive and difficult job to do, rebuilding transmissions is almost an art and finding a guy who is really good at it is difficult..

good luck and god speed, see if the guy can hit the zerks on your drive line real quick with a grease gun for like $20 or something like that, shouldn't take him or another shop more then 2-3 mins to do them all and at the very least you'll have ruled that out.

that's what had me thinking a coil pack... is multi-misfires meaning that one coil fires 2 banks so if you have a bad coil...multi-misfires....

and a coil pack going bad can also be intermittent as well... to check those find a guy that can check the Resistance running through he wire or simply buy one and swap it around until you quit getting a code thrown at you again though they are kid of expensive so your best bet is to try and make it hurry up and fail all of the way or get someone who can properly diagnose this.....


it's just like your health care, a surgeon is always going to want to cut something, a transmission guy is going to think it's the transmission an engine guy is going to think it's the engine and so on and so forth......i really don't think it's your transmission but given the milage and lack of proper information here, it very well could be...yeah that's alot of help i know......lol, anyways, do your running around eventually you'll find a smart guy in your area who'll know for sure!

at this point I would call around and find a shop that specializes in Toyotas, have them look at it. The tranny shop will of course tell you it is the trans, the truck does have $350k on it.

hey don't worry too much Aamco..is like the micky d's of transmission shops they are a dime a dozen, i wouldn't start freaking out if they tell you , you need a new transmission, i would still get a second opinion, this is basically where you go if you want to do trans work and you just got out of mech's school....

that said, it's localized, i have been to 1 or 2 of their shops that actually have a few dudes who know what they are doing in there, so since they are this massive chain you'll find a few good ones and mostly bad ones...
whatever you do don;t let them leave it on the rack and do the work, I'm 98% sure if your transmission really is gone, there are better people to hire for the R&R......

good luck, if they come back and say everything looks good then be happy and get back to looking at rolling/drive line issues for your sounds and coil packs and such for the stumbling.
 
i dont think the p0300 code was from this, like i said last night that is a old code that isnt related. your tranny acting up WILL NOT throw codes. and AWilson also said that that code needs to be accompanied by another code like p0301 or 02 ect to indicated which cylinder is misfiring. i think that code was never cleared and when the guy pulled the codes he pulled an old code that is not related at all.

i would take it to an independent shop that is a full service for asian vehicles, and have them take a look at it too. a tranny shop will tell you its the tranny or tq converter most likly cause thats what they do and they want to sell you the work. get more than one persons(shops) imput here. if multiple shops start telling you the same thing, boom you have your answer. i still think its the tranny just cause of the mileage of the vehicle and your description of the problem. but with out driving it its hard to be sure.

yeah but if it was the transmission, she would have a repeatable problem at a certain speed and rpm from a worn clutch disc ...
it could be the valve body is clogged, but short of that anythign else going on with the transmission would seem to happen when gears are shifting, she says that's fine....

no, there's no jerky shifting or clanking noises. feels like it shifts ok...

i have no freaking clue as how this can be related to the transmission.....sounds like a a wheel,tire,drive line, something spinning or rolling, or even a engine misfiring under load.....transmissions don't usually fail like that, they usually just go all together or you lose a gear/clutch disc and it shudders and stumbles between shifts......the way i read her post doesn't make em think along those lines........but as you guys are saying @ 350k anything is possible......

like i said i'm at a toal loss on this as the information i' hearing is hard to figure out what the heck is happening there....
 
i take that to mean it feels like shes driving over a wash-borded road, its all rough and bumpy and shaking the whole truck... it sounds to me like the clutches are bad, and just shuddering as she is accerating or yeah the valve body is shot, either way it sounds to me like it needs a rebuild and that i think will be more than buying a new(used) used tranny.
