I have a 97 Runner 5VZFE SR5.
I heard some small ticking on the passenger side near the middle cylinder. Was there for about 3 weeks. Then the other day driving home the engine started banging pretty hard. I pulled over and had it towed home.
I pulled the coils and the middle coil and it was melted off about 1/2 inch into the sparkplug tube. The spark plug was all the way out and resting in the tube with the bottom with the ground electrode gone.
Then I pulled the valve cover and everything looks good...nothing loose etc...plenty of oil.
I turned the engine over and everything sounded clean...no knocking etc. I haven't done a compression check yet but wanted to check to see what else I might be missing.
Is it possible that it was just a loose sparkplug?
Any help would be great.
