Need help with temp gauge and broken wire

I have 2 issues that I'm looking for some help.

1. Changing the oil in the car today and while waiting, I discovered 2 wires (see picture) that are broken at the back of the engine facing the firewall. Any idea what is this and how I should fix this? Picture is looking down from the top. There's no room to take a picture from the back.

2. Also, I would be very grateful if someone could provide a picture of the engine coolant temperature sending unit(gauge) location. I had the thermostat replaced with the timing belt job but the temp gauge on the cluster just sits at cold without moving. Heater is working and car runs fine so I think the temp sending unit to the ECU is working. Rest of the gauges in the cluster are working so I think it may be a wire issue or a faulty sending unit.

The sending unit for the temp gauge on the dash is at the back of the engine by the firewall. I'm guessing those broken wires have something to do with it.

I was afraid you were to say that. Now I need to figure out where the wire runs to.

Is that green part in your pic a terminal? Looks like the wire goes in there.

The green thing looks like a butt splice to the same connector as the broken wire but I could be wrong. I'll have to get some stuff out of the way to try to get a clearer look.

Bumping an old thread here as I have the same exact problem. I texted Brillo a ton and he was very helpful in locating the sensor, after a closer look my wire is also snipped off. I'm going to add 2 attachments, screenshots of suggestions as to what to do, with all that being said, I'm not savvy at all on what the FB screenshot suggests. I don't know jack about electrical. If this sounds like a hassle, would I be better off just getting a scan gauge?

I didn't provide pics of my own as I can barely get back there but I found the snipped wire for sure. With the warm summer aproaching, I'd like to have some sort of temperature gauge working properly so I don't risk overheating and having no warning. Thanks in advance.
