I was actually recommending another Toyota dealership. Trust me dealerships do not cover each other's asses. We look forward to revealing another dealership screwed up or missed something. Go to a well established dealership that gets great reviews and ask for their master tech to have a look.

Sorry, when I said 'independent' I didn't mean to imply an indy mechanic, just someone (dealership or otherwise) that doesn't have history with the truck.

Dealers and mechanics are loathe to take these on until they've replaced every component that's effected because there is no way to tell if its a two hour search or a twenty hour search.

Don't forget to get the battery/alternator checked. If the battery is 3+ years old you may due for replacement soon anyway, and I've seen borderline batteries cause these same erratic symptoms.

Last, don't fail to involve the states attorneys office. The DMV and the states attorney are different government entities with different mandates. If there's any wrong doing (and there may not be) the DMV may refer you to the states attorney... they may not.

Finally got to have a proper chat with the mechanic who has the truck. The problem he is having is the o2 sensor that was replaced. At tick over the sensor acts perfectly normal with the correct voltage showing. If you accelerate the voltage flatlines and it no longer reads and this trips the warning lights from the ecm.

He can find no fault with the wiring, through the week he has been bouncing ideas of another mechanic and hopes to have him at his workshop tomorrow to try work through it. The truck is apparently driving perfect with no loss of power when the warning lights are on. He has been researching for known faults online so I assume he has found his way here. These guys have been really decent and very fair to deal with and I trust that they have my best interests in mind.

Will be contacting the states attorney office on Monday after I speak with the inspector for the county.

Just a final update on this thread.

Nothing will come of how the vehicle was sold, the dealer sold the vehicle as is and it had been in with Toyota a few weeks before and they said they could not find a code. The dealer can say he sold the vehicle in good faith.

The state inspection centre can dismiss the extra disconnected O2 sensor as something they didn't notice, state inspections are very basic.

My mechanic ran a check on every wire, swapped the O2 sensors from each side and ended up with the same results. Swapped back in a different ecu and again the exact same results. A new cat and O2 sensor were installed on bank two. Vehicle serviced and he has said it driving really good and suggests I just drive it as is with the check engine light on. I have to give props to the mechanics at J&J Automotive in New Bern NC who did not charge me any labor costs for all the work they done on the truck over a four week period.

So for now I am just going to try enjoy it as is and hopefully it turns out to be something minor.

See if you can get the inspection office to give you something in writing saying it was missed (by them) prior to you purchasing the vehicle. It would be a shame if they were to do another inspection later and ding you for it.
