Need info on ECU pinouts - 02 Manual Swap

I'm attempting a manual tranny swap into my 02 4Runner V6 4x4. I don't think its been done before on 01-02. Biggest concern is the CEL and all the wiring. Swapping an ECU from an earlier 4Runner will not work since I have the drive by wire throttle. I was thinking swapping one from a 03-04 Taco. It is only a guess that they will be compatible. I'm trying to find an ECU pinout chart for 02 4Runner to compare. I found a chart for the taco ECU. I'm not sure if the FSM has the pinout diagram since I can't find it anywhere in there.

If someone has or knows a link to what I'm looking for please help me out here! Any info would be appreciated!

I have some good news and I have some bad news.

The full PDF you are looking for is somewhere on this link:
Index of /4Runner_96-02_Repair&Wiring/techinfo.toyota.com/ileaf/ewdtmc2/ewdtmpdf/ewdsourc/2002/024runne/systemci

The bad news is you need to find the right one.

Thanks I'll look through that!

Looking at the Taco pinouts looks like they added VSC/TRAC only in 2004. I don't really care about keeping VSC but TRAC is a little useful. Also 04 ECU will work better with the electronic brake system I think.
Now have to compare the two and see if it'll actually fit.

So comparing the 02 4runner and 04 Taco ECU pinouts, they are almost identical. The only difference is E12 pin 6 function ST1- which the taco has and 4Runner does not. Most of the wire colors different and the name of connectors are different. 4runner - E14, E12, E11, E10 and E9, Taco - E5, E6, E7, E8, E9, E10. If you look at the illustration of the connectors on both vehicles, they are identical. Looks like its plug and play.

I'm getting the rest of the parts tomorrow and should be good to go next week. I'm not doing the work myself but I'll be helping out my mechanic a bit. I'll let you know how it plays out. Not doing a writeup since theres lots of info out there on the swap. Just thought the ECU info would be useful since theres no known swap thats been done on 01-02s.

Check and see if the ST1 is not on a different E connector. I had two wires on the 97 that went to different E connectors between the auto and manual and realized(after a while) that they went up the harness and doubled back. I read that the later model tacomas had the same connectors between auto and manual and it looks like you were lucky that the 4runner does too. Earlier models were different connectors and I replaced the engine wiring harness to make it easier. The E number was also labeled different between auto and manual of the same year model. Good Luck and let us know how it turns out

I will double check everything again. But I can't find this ST1- anywhere. I was using info from this link

http://www.well.com/user/mosk/images/Early_Tacoma_ECUs_v1.pdf

Whoever compiled all of this info, respect and thank you!
The last pages of this pdf have a list of functions and definition. ST1- can't be found there either. I'm thinking it may be a mistake or something. I will try and find more info on it before I plug it in.

ST1 could be start Possible it is the clutch cancel/start switch which would not be found on the auto. That would take the place of the park/neutral switch on the auto. You need a wiring diagram and follow that ST1 back and see where it goes

I will try find a diagram but in the pdf the auto and manual are compared side by side and ST1 is present in both. Also I could not find one pin that a manual would have and auto wouldn't, theres lots that are not used in a manual. I thought the clutch pedal switch and cancel switches didn't run to the ecu but somehow were wired to the ignition switch. Thats the only part that is still unclear to me. I must get a wiring diagram and understand how they work.

Actually, it they are wired BETWEEN the ECM and the ignition switch.

This part I can help with (I do 4Runners not Tacos). The Park/neutral on the '01-'02 4Runners operates between the 12V+ from the ST2 terminal of the ignition switch (via the 7.5A STARTER fuse) and the STA terminal of the ECM at Pin 7 on E14. Wiring diagram attached. There were never any manuals in '01-'02, but the clutch/cancel and park/neutrals were wired exactly the same way in '99-'00, the last years of the 5-speed. The wiring diagrams, including ECM pinouts, are not in the FSM per se, but in the EWD volume, link follows:

http://tacoma.site40.net/4Runner_96-02_Repair&Wiring/local%20files/wiring.html

This is the same source as the link posted by Supermoney above but starts at an INDEX PAGE, which is life changing.

The pin-outs for all plugs are in a single chapter called Connector List toward the end. Look them up by the E-number.

Good luck. I love swap projects, and I'll help where I can.

Here's the diagram for starting and ignition:

Thank you for all the info!
So I should have connectors for everything hanging around in there?
I took off the panel under the steering wheel today and I think I saw the connector for the cruise control switch on the clutch pedal, couldn't find any other ones, should look more.
One problem I found is the 4wd computer is attached in the place for the clutch pedal, I think I need to relocate that. Whoever installed my alarm system made a huge mess with all the wires which I have to clean up as well.

Oh and the pic doesnt work for me.

Edit: It works now thanks!

Sorry I didn't read your post right, so there would not be any connectors hanging around. So if I understand correctly I just need to wire the clutch start switch instead of the P/N switch? Do you know the location of the P/N Switch? Is it on the A/T shifter?

That would be my assumption.

I'm a 5-speed guy so I don't know, but I assume so.

Ok, thanks again. This sort of clears up everything!

I'll post updates as I go. Should be starting early next week. Picked up all the shifters, boots and pedals today. Drive shaft coming on Monday, ECU on Wednesday. Can't wait to have a 5-Speed!!!

OP A word to the wise. Always defer to TheDurk when it comes to wiring. He reads wiring diagrams like a second grade reading primer, while some of us... The park neutral switch is on the transmission but can be grounded or rewired to the clutch switch in a couple different spots. You have five plugs on your 4runner ecu, the first three E9,E10E11 are engine functions, they are going to be pretty much the same on any runner or tacoma with the same engine. The last two E12 and E14 are going to have some differences between the auto and manual tacoma. As long as the Manual tacoma ecu has every wire it needs in the right spot it should work. You do need to make sure the reverse lights work too as there is a different switch for the auto and manual. ST1 runs through the stop light switch to the ignition so I am assuming you have to step on the brake to get it to start on the auto

Wiring diagrams are not hard for me to read since my other hobby is vintage audio. I know its quite a bit different from automotive but EWDs are EWDs. The hard part for me is locating components on the vehicle.

The ECUs are exactly the same except the ST1. How did you find out what it is? If you have a diagram please post it!

I don't have to press on the brake to start the vehicle, it starts either way. Maybe thats why my 4Runner doesn't have it. Well I don't think it should cause any trouble if nothing is coming to that pin???

I think I found a diagram in another thread on how to wire that switch to the manual tranny. I don't think my wires would be the same colour since Toyota loves to change wire colours))) I think I can figure it out by the pin numbers from the switch. Diagram attached bellow.

wiring diagrams for me are like theoretical math equations, sure I recognize the numbers but the concept is sailing way over my head.
Click on the link TheDurk gave you and scroll all the way to the bottom, that is where the wiring diagram for your 2002 runner is. It shows ST1 on the ECU. I do not have one for a 2004 tacoma so I cannot help you there. I also cannot help you much with that diagram for the park neutral switch because I replaced the engine wiring harness when I did my swap. That gave me the proper wires for the transmission. Just concentrate on what the 2004 tacoma ecu needs and make sure all the pins are in the right place. The p/n get replaced with the clutch start and the reverse needs to get wired in. You can put the reverse switch on the manual tranny and wire it that way. Pull off the glove box on your runner( just a couple bolts) and you can see the ecu and all the wiring for it

Theres one connector with 2 wires on the manual tranny, I was assuming its the same on the auto tranny for the reverse lights.

I'll look through those diagrams again.

The reverse lights in the auto are in the park neutral safety switch which you won't have any more. You can either jump it like in the diagram you posted or use the switch in the manual trans and wire it yourself. Think about replacing the whole engine wiring harness from the 2004 tacoma if you have access to one, It takes about three hours to do and comes with everything you need for the manual transmission( you will need a upper manifold intake gasket) and is guaranteed to have the proper pin placement on the ecu.

Unfortunately I don't have access to a harness. I'll try to make my harness work first.

I'm cleaning up the wiring mess under the dash right now. Just looking at the ABS/VSC computer and can't figure out where to put it since its bolted on in the exact spot where the clutch pedal is suppose to go. I wonder if I unplug it for now, can I drive without it? Or my brakes would be gone completely? I really don't want to extend the wiring for it and fish it through to the other side of dash.
