HID Help- UPDATED for no real reason

So I'm looking for someone that knows their stuff concerning HID kits. I am not looking for opinions about different kits
I'm not concerned with the legality or how xenon work but instead I've been doing a ton of research and my own investigations and here's what I've come up with. PLEASE tell me if something is incorrect.

So I'm not too happy with the 5th gen headlight output. My 5th gen has projector style headlights but has halogen H11 bulbs. Although it's not a true projector the light cutoff is very good compared to other headlights out there. With a little adjustment running xenon shouldn't dazzle oncoming drivers while adding much needed light.
I started investigating what people are using and HID kits in general. I came across a lot of surprising information and figured I'd share/get your takes with the ultimate goal of running an HID kit in my truck SAFELY.
So here goes...

Apparently the 2 main manufacturers of HID ( Xenon ) bulbs. Philips and Osram. Both manufacturers DO NOT make bulbs for aftermarket kits or aftermarket kits in general. When you buy a kit that claims to use Philips or Osram bulbs it is fake. There are a handful of aftermarket bulb makers but they source parts such as glass from Phillips, elements from Osram, Salt from company X, etc, etc. and assemble the bulbs themselves. The 2 biggest or best known manufacturers of AFTERMARKET bulbs are Morimoto and DDM.
From what I've read, the vast majority of kits on Amazon, EBay, etc are 100% fake and use Chinese parts.
The concern here is obviously build quality and longevity but the real point of concern is HEAT and output.
Here's where the 5th gen specifically comes into play. I'm aware that many people run aftermarket HID kits but I think most pop them in and hope for the best. Apparently Chinese xenon bulbs have very little quality control as far as wattage/voltage/output/heat/bulb quality. Before installing a kit into my new truck I noticed that the headlight H11 low beam bulbs enter a cavity within the headlight horizontally. I measured the inside and found it to be almost 3 inches deep exactly.
I purchased a cheap kit from Amazon just to do some testing. I purchased Apex which is rated #2 on many websites. The quality wasn't great but humor me here. I measured the bulb and found it to be 1 3/4 inches. Plenty of room horizontally. However if you look in the headlight there is a reflector that runs from the bulb opening horizontally and is VERY close to the bulb and runs the length of the bulb.
I used a thermal imaging camera and tried to run a halogen h11 and my xenon side by side and found both maxed out my thermal camera ( over 846 degrees F ). I then did some research and hound Halogens run around 1000 degrees F and xenon bulbs ARE SUPPOSED to run cooler but with aftermarket kits is hard to tell and there is no guidelines. Most Chinese kits actually run hotter!
I used a temperature gun and got a reading of 1006 on the halogen and maxed the temp gun at 1400 on the xenon. I found that actual arc temperature runs between 2000-3000 degrees F depending on bulb and wattage/voltage.

I then got concerned by the sheer amount of heat POURING off the xenon bulb and got very concerned about melting my headlights and possibly starting a fire. The inside of the headlight appears some type of plastic but I found melting points and ignition points of MANY plastics and found they were nowhere near the temperatures I was getting.

I would advise anyone getting ready to install a HID kit to do a little research first. I ask what company should I go with? I'm leaning towards mormoto but can't find any hard data on how hot their bulbs run. Has anyone melted a headlight here? Anyone have ALOT of time running Morimoto? Anyone keep their HIDS for a few hours at a time? What is the best company? according to consumer opinion it's Kensun and Apex ( rated #1-2 ) all over the Internet which I have found through research and testing to be crap.

I have tons of pictures of my thermal camera readings, temp gun readings, various charts and other random stuff but 8 pictures is my upload limit.

6th pic is temp gun that shows max 700 reading I got off the BASE of the xenon bulb. Arc temps can be 2-3K degrees!

What I need is a headlight Guru to put my mind at ease, offer advise, clear up any confusion and enlighten the path to safe HID kit as Toyota OEM retrofit does not seem to exist. Thank you!

I'm don't believe trying not to melt my housings is overthinking.

I did search and found lots of people putting in this kit or that and how they installed them. I even found 1 thread about how xenon work and the legality of them. I found nothing about people measuring temperatures and concern for headlight reflector damage or about legit xenon or not and it's relation to heat output.
 
You can get Philips bulbs from Xenon Depot, a bunch of us are using them with no issues

they are even on sale right now

I don't know anything about the brand you are talking about, I use the Philips kit. Also, are you measuring a 55W kit or a 35W kit? I have the 35W kit, I haven't measured any temps but after a year I have had no melting or anything like that.

You are thinking about this way too much, the housing is not the same temp as the plasma arc. If it was, the halogen filament temperature would already have been melting your headlights

Yep. Go to the depot, ask them what you need and they will fix you up. There have been literally hundreds of 5th gen 4runners here retrofitted by them with no issues.

Personally I don't feel like you're overthinking, if it can melt the fog housing seems like a fair consideration, just doesn't seem to be a problem. Heat isn't all that bad, here in CO it helps melt the snow on the housing in the winter.

that's because they increased the wattage for the light with their LED kit, not because of the plasma temp in HID lighting

I'm trying not to overthink but if I usually do a lot of research before I jump into anything.
I tried to cross my Ts and dot my Is and perform some testing before posting and yes I did utilize the search but there is literally hundreds of threads mostly concerning how installs were done or what kit people "like"
I was just data hunting.
I felt like posting this thread was miles ahead of
" what hid kit should I get ? " but maybe not...

Appreciate the responses

I just remember two folks posting melted housings after putting HID in the fog housing. At least one of the threads turned into a mess and got deleted.
 
The fog lights are like 18W, even a 35W kit is going to cause problems

Yeah, mind boggling that Toyota did that to you 5.5gen guys, 10-13 has a H11. I mean first taking away your party mode then that... :sad:

Research is good and I applaud your effort. I do a ton of it in my job. Sometimes though you don't need to reinvent the wheel so to speak. Good luck and post results!
 
I do a ton of research too before pulling the trigger on things like this. I ended up getting the Xenon Depot Phillips kit and couldn't be happier.

Make sure you check the aiming of your headlights. They aren't all set spot on from the factory. Also if you load the back down, your lights will aim higher.

I plan on putting air bags in the back so I can level the truck when I tow so I'm not blinding people.
 
Just received my 5000k kit from XenonDepot today! Will be installing Friday. I also did quite a bit of research before my purchase. I was also convinced by the guys on here that a kit from XenonDepot was the right way to go, even got some great feedback from the XenonDepot guys themselves on this board. I'm sure neither of us will be disappointed!

Heat is a big reason I haven't done HIDs yet. I've used them in the past they weren't in an enclosed area like the T4R head light housing.

After seeing our pics I'm pretty much sold on not doing HIDs. I'm not worried about the ballast. Main concern is, similar to yours, and the HID bulb. Maybe I'll do HIDs in the future, but for now I'll wait and watch LEDs.

I'm going to do the H9 conversion with an H11/H9 harness. That gets me more lumens with low risk.

My goal was not to scare anyone, I was just trying to do my own research before taking internet advice at face value. At the end of the day if I want to be a member here I have to put a little trust in long time members
Time will tell. I will update the post if you'd like ? after I install and run the kit a while.

No one has had a heat problem, and there is no reason to expect one. The filament on Halogen bulbs would have maxed that I photo .

Ordered the XenonDepot kit from a lot of advice here. Philips 4300K option
Kit looks pretty nice, lots of crap to find spot for though!
I wasn't a big fan of the double sided tape for the ballasts so I made some brackets. Other than that the look pretty good
The lights seem a little more yellow than I was expecting especially the drivers side...thinking they will burn in and may change to more white with use?

Anyways here's the install pics, I'll update after a few thousand miles, hopefully I can steer someone on the fence one way or another

Side note: anyone know off hand wether my headlight will need adjusted down? I've never touched the factory setting and the halogen bulbs were aimed correctly. It's storming outside and I won't get to drive it at night for about a week.
