Hey everyone one, about to get a 4runner and need some opinions. Looking at the trail and the sr5 model. Which would you get and why both would be 2016

I'd probably do the trail b/c of the suspension. I did an LE 4x2 because I don't need 4x4 But I do like the trail

Just as a heads up you are about to get flamed as there are about 50 threads asking this same question. Use the search bar, do your homework and then ask a more specific question and there will be a lot of very informed answers for you.

In saying that it really depends on your needs. I would break it down into something as simple as, if you need a third row buy and SR5. If you need a locker for more extreme off roading or prefer the hood scoop/wheels buy a trail.

Get the trail, has distinctive looks, better resale value. Intererior with black dash looks better, IMO. Also the center clock area display shows more info. I always regret not getting the trail. Plus if you are ever going to off-road it, the locker is awesome.

I just bought a new Trail two weeks ago.

Crawl and Terrain Select, and the factory locking diff were the main reasons. Love the manual 4wd selection lever too. The wheels look much better to me too, and the hood scoop looks neat even though its fake.

I went with the non-premium, and like the color of the Trail seats better over the SR5's, as well as the dash color difference.

Additionally, the dealer didn't have any 4wd SR5's, and only the one Trail at a great price, so that made the choice easy.

You should test drive KDSS. Only Trail editions have KDSS as an option. The dynamics are different with the system on the road especially. If that is not necessary, it's mostly a question of how much do you want a rear locker and crawl control. I think you'll pay about a $2500-3000 premium for the Trail. Having a shop install an ARB plus compressor will probably be in the same price range, so if you want a rear locker I'd pick up the trail. If not, I'd go for an SR5.

Edit: looks like you have your answer. Good luck!

I bought an SR5 Premium. Reason is that as much as I hate to admit it, it'll never see any real off-road activity. Occasional beach, camping and me acting like a 16 year old when it snows. I did buy Trail wheels after the fact because they do look a lot better. I would've liked to buy a Trail Premium but it honestly didn't make sense for me. (Also not a big fan of the silver bumper inserts on the Trail)

even if off-road isn't your main focus, being a trail will help the resale value a lot

also, trail is better on-road too if you get it with KDSS

No, it won't. Resale value on 4Runners, regardless of type, have a residual value of 70% or so of list price, which is the highest of SUV's after three years. If it has a higher list price you get more. Models don't matter and there is no "rarity" adder.

I went SR5 because I plan on upgrading the suspension and beating the shit out of it offroad.

And 3rd row. My wife told me I could buy it because of the 3rd row. lol

:lmao:

I think he's implying that people seeking a trail will be willing to pay premium for it?

why don't you think there is a rarity adder? people like factory lockers and Trail models will be less available on the used market.

I went with a Trail for the locker, KDSS and fake hood scoop (looks I guess).

It all comes down to how you are going to use it and the $$ you want to spend.

There is no rarity adder. Here is a thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/gener...out-cars-website-concerning-resale-value.html with a link to a decent article. Resale is simply age, mileage, list price when new and condition of vehicle. There is no rare or modded. Truth be known the TE without KDSS is rarer than the TE's with KDSS. All TE's come with a rear locker. So by your logic the TE without KDSS should command a higher price than the ones with KDSS!

Sure, a few people like something like a factory locker and they will find it... at the same price as all the other vehicles equipped with factory lockers. The vehicles with a factory locker and KDSS will be worth more after three years but only because they had a higher list price when new. Limiteds will command the highest price after three years simply because their list price is higher. 70% of list for the 4Runner, regardless of model.

well that's all silly, there are numerous of examples of vehicles that were similarly priced new but much more valuable now. I come from BMW owning so that's my reference, a stick shift and the correct package did not cost much more new but can almost double the price of an old one.

the problem with the link you are posting is that its about the claim that rare vehicles are valuable because they are rare, and it's correct that this is not true. the difference is that we are talking about a features that make it more desirable because of their utility, not because they are rare.
