Need shock and spring suggestions,for stock ride height.

I was having clunking noise from the rear and it also felt very loose in the back. Also the drivetrain would make a sudden shift just after stopping, when the auto transmission would drop to idle. This is in a 98 sr5, 4wd.

I had a look at it up on the lift and one of the shocks is broken at the top where it should be connected to the mount.

I have been looking on this site for suspension advice and after a few hours of searching and even using the advanced google search for this site, I have not found much in a comparison for suspension configurations for what I would like.

I did find a Tundra brake upgrade which I would like to do. I hate the stock brakes. This may happen at the same time.

I am looking for suspension opinions/advice for a daily driver, rarely offroad, I would not mind a little stiffer ride to improve handling, but don't want an uncomfortable ride. Less brake dive and less body roll, is desired.

I have seen people post about different spring and shock combos, but I don't know what effect they will have. I would also like to correct the sag the 4runner has. After reading through many posts, my vehicle has this problem too. I would like to be able to load it up or tow something, but most of the time it will be empty in the back. I realized that there have to compromises. I also do not want to have to replace the rear springs in just a few years, so would be willing to go with pickup truck parts if need be.

I have seen that bilsteins are popular, but also saw of pro comp adjustable shocks that looked good too. Please give some advise. I have to get this done soon as it is very loose with bumps and turns. Thank you.

Thank you. It was on a drive on lift, and was put in gear while the brake was held and given gas, both forward and reverse, several times. There was minimal movement, but there was a noise in the back. If the noise persists after fixing the broken shock, I will definitely check all the u- joints again. I am going to check out that link you posted right now. I was thinking transmission cross member or engine mount bushings, but seemed to check out ok.

I have a feeling there still may be noise after fixing the broken shock, we will see.

Bilsteins are really popular around here, and are what I plan on using when I left mine.

If you don't want a lift, RockAuto dot com has some good pricing on stock size suspension. I went with the monroe quick-struts to replace my extremely worn out front suspension and they are pretty good for the price. Installation wasn't too bad since they are assembled and rear coils and shocks are pretty cheap on their site.

If you want a lift, there's a sticky with a ton of options. Sonoran Steel and Toytech are two pretty well recieved options.

I am looking for information on how the different shock and spring combinations perform. I have seen posts where there a couple different bilsteins for the 4 runner. There are also shocks for the Tacoma and the tundra that also fit. Then to make it even more complicated there are the different springs that can be run with each.

In the posts I read, I never once read a spring rate. I would like to get an idea of how the setups perform, so I can try to make a well-informed decision. I have to fix the rear shocks and the front is soft, I have a great deal of brake dive. Thanks the input.

I was thinking about going with the 51mm bilsteins. What springs would address the rear sag issue and work well with these shocks? Do these shocks come in a stock length? The ones I have seen on here, have been from people looking to lift the suspension. Part numbers would fantastic. Opinions on how this would ride, will be appreciated.

I am pondering going with Eibach springs and bilsteins shocks. Will the 5100 series shocks work with stock height 4runners or those only for trucks with a suspension lift? Do the 5100 series come in stock shock lengths? Thanks in advance.
