88 4runner, 22re, 5spd.
Less than 5000 miles on: new head gasket, new oil pump, water pump, radiator, plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, timing chain, clutch, valve cover gasket, etc
The truck also has the 82 celica supra afm mod. It has worked great for at least 1500 miles.
The first time I drive it after sitting overnight or leaving from work, it STRUGGLES to build speed. 1st gear and 2nd gear are for the most part ok. 3rd and 4th...it bogs down, stumbles, pops and I have to ease into the gas to get it to accelerate. If i mash the gas it will get horribly worse. Its been going on for about a month. Its getting worse. I can be in 4th gear with the gas on the floor and be doing 35-40mph. Here's the kicker...after it gets up to speed the first time, once it breaks 55mph or so, it will not hesitate or struggle again until the next time it sits for 8 plus hours. Not only that, it runs flawlessly after crossing the 55mph~ish barrier.
I discovered a small coolant leak from the hose next to the throttle position sensor. I fixed the leak (loose hose clamp) But prior to fixing it, there was antifreeze getting on the TPS. I thought that maybe the antifreeze was messing with the tps. But fixing the leak did nothting for the problem.
I have the next two days off and would like to fix this problem. I have contemplated taking the celica afm back off and putting the stock air flow setup in to see if thats it. But that doesnt make sense to me, it seems to me if it was the afm, it would do it all the time. Like i said, after the first inital acceleration, it runs like a dream, but the first time through the gears is getting to be down right scary. I thought about changing the tps but it seems to me that the tps would do it all the time if that was the problem.
Is there something I am missing? Some temperature related part? This is the first time the truck has seen cold weather since I have had it. I am open to all suggestions.
ps the oil is clean,no antifreeze, and vice versa.
