Need some advice

Over the weekend I discovered that my fuel tank has a pin sized hole leak in it There's a small wet spot about the size of a quarter if I fill my tank more than half way. I patched it temporarily but I need to replace the tank. No sense in finding a fuel tank from a Junk yard being that I live in New England they are probably just as rusty as mine. A new fuel tank is 293.00$ off rock auto, I'd obviously replace the fuel pump as well. All said and done I would be spending around 500 to 600$ to replace it. Could anyone recommend an aftermarket fuel tank? I'm on the fence about just selling my truck now to get something a bit newer. I knew what I was getting into with a 15 year old truck but I can't keep sinking all my money into it

Well if you are talking a 3rd gen you are only talking about 2 years or so newer, but 2 years isn't going to make much difference, in fact its quite possible to find a 1997 4Runner in better condition than a 2002.

In general, unless yours was rode hard and put away wet for a decade then replacing parts here and there is basically part of owning a vehicle.


I "think" you can get a "Spectra" fuel tank at Advanced Auto right now with a 20% discount for right around $200.
I have absolutely no idea if Spectra is any good, however the reviews are mostly all positive.

Denso fuel pump KIT is about $170

So probably about $400 total

I was looking at replacing my 4Runner with a Tacoma, I need the 4WD and I only want a manual transmission. I knew what I was getting into with this truck...and it's been fine for my needs, I just want something newer and would rather just have a monthly payment

If the gas tank is rusted to the point that it has holes in it, I'd be surprised if the rest of the undercarriage isn't equally rusty. I would suggest looking at the frame, axle housing, etc. closely for signs of terminal rust.

Some rust can be fixed, but at some point it becomes a lost cause without spending more than the vehicle is worth.

I already had my frame repaired in spots from the rust...yeah the rust has taken it's toll but I've seen worse

I think I can help you out on the cheap side or temporary fix. I have a tank off of a 98 that will be available in the next few weeks. From the bottom there appears to be no rust not sure what the top side looks like. If it's clean you can have it for $50
