Short version:: I am basically 21 (july), trying to finish up college majoring in graphic design or photography (some type of art!). With the career and job roads ahead. Do you think its an ok step in my life to go on with it?

continue if you want more info on it

Long version:: keep in mind, how I see life is Whatever happens, happens. Just go with the flow type guy. But then that asian side of me is telling me to be clean slate, work and get that money.

I have 3 tattoos at the moment. 2 ram heads on my shoulder area and a samurai on my right calf. This year has been the most change I have been through and expecting even more changes once I move out and go to a university out of austin.

I work at target right now (they dont care about tattoos) and planning to stay with them until i finish college and probably after until I can find a job that deals with my major. I have thought it through for a while and came to conclusion that since i would be with target until i finish school, if i was to find a higher ranked job in an office for example, i would be wearing a button up anyway. application->interview-> working, it would all be in long sleeve shirts anyway. my motive before with business was money. bad choice. i should have stuck to my passion as a kid which was art, which i see now. im deff doing something in art! even if its scraping by trying to reach a point in life that i love!

I planned to do just my quarter sleeve (backgrounds for the rams but the artist said not do to that because it wouldnt look right with a sleeve down the road, so its either nothing or sleeve. i was planning on keeping tattoos hidden as my major was business but i realized my life should be based on wanting to make money, but to be happy and wake up doing something i look forward too.

As a child I grew up loving japanese style art (im asian so its kind of natural lol) loving dragons and tigers and all that. so this next piece will not be something I will regret as it will be from a really great artist, prob one of the best japanese artist here in austin I would say. so I know it will not turn out crappy! my biggest concern initially was jobs after college. some family members were telling me to wait till im 30+ to get a sleeve. but i think i am in a point in my life where this will have its most meaning. how i see it is, i know it may be because of policy but do i really want to work somewhere where they judge you by your looks instead of skill. i know it may just be policy. and if a place does allow it, i would be smart when to cover them.. (meeting, higher ranked members, etc)

so i was planning to get a snake and a japanese mask blending in with my ram head (just 1 side right now). the design wont get played out(to me at least) because its not one of those things that i like at the moment like a band or something a kid that didnt think about tattoo would get. The reason for the snake and the mask is representing changes/growing as a snake does with shedding. and the mask would for warding away the bad luck as i change.

i know thats a lot to read but thats just background that i can think of on the spot right now before someone starts tearing me apart for something i can explain. lol hopefully all this made sense, i kind of just went off on this thread (a lot a lot of thinking about it as you can see)

i know this forum is diversed so i need some insight on the situation from yall instead of just family and friends! so yall, what do you think? yes or no?

ask more questions if you really want to help me out. i dont mind hearing everyones opinions. thanks guys.

yea, i actually read that this morning, but i was trying to see if anyone had a diff outlook on it since he was planning to go to something that seemed like he has to stay professional (law) but my end was to art. seeing if anyone would have thought different.

My opinion, major in something other than art. I was a fine art major in 07...been doing random jobs since then, nothing too profitable. I am now 70% done with my MBA, because thats the type of degree needed in todays economy. Art is a really tough way to make a living...although graphic design could be profitable.

For the tattoo, as long as you can cover it up with long sleeves, shouldn't be a big deal. Tattoos are getting more common to a point where the are a little more acceptable. I'd probably only go 3/4, that way you can roll the sleeves up, and you won't have ink poking out at the cuffs.

Trust me, as an art major, I am for tattoos, if it were up to me, I wouldn't care if you had them or not. But thats not how a majority of people think now a days. I plan on getting more now that I'm further along in my career, but I am still careful of how much/where I put them. Just don't be impatient about it, you'll still have these life events when you're older. And you may change your mind about what you want.

I have a tattoo on my wrist. Never had a problem getting a good job.

If you plan on staying in the art community, go for it. If NGO or gubby work is in your future, go for it. If you are going to work for a private company, or rely on private companies for contracts (graphic design) then keep it clean or covered.

Brian, I may be missing something, but how does that reddit search help make the decision in your mind?

.

Ahhh grandpa, that is a link to a Reddit community forum specially dedicated to everything tatoo. It isn't a search. Check it out ....

I have no tats but yours looks legit.

I did not think the guy's 4LO/HI low tat looked good at all. I already get enough $hit about being a 4Runner fanatic from friends & GF, if I tatted myself with T4R or 4LO people would think I'm crazy.
