I've got friends in the eclipse path and the planning in their town has been extensive. You're going to have to fight crowds, unless you are getting to your spot a week early and cell reception will be iffy at best, but I'd think there will be plenty of supplies. It's not like a hurricane that pops up with a week's notice. My two cents on saving two cents.

I can get 5gal fuel and 7 gal water, 2 58qt plano boxes on a small roof basket... when i fold the seats down there is plenty,of room inside for clothes camera 50qt ice chest, non perishables and even more water...

Not to be a grouch, but Ditto this. Oregon is expecting about 1 million out of state visitors for the eclipse. The state DOT has banned all oversize trucks from the highways from Friday through Tuesday. They are expecting the highways to be so jammed/blocked to the point where they are considering purposely blocking one lane so emergency response teams can get where they need to be.

It's going to be a mess.....all for just something that is happening again in US in 7 years Something that also happened when I was in grade school or junior high (can't remember which)...so all the talk of once in a lifetime is a bunch of BS. Sadly I expect high demand pricing on things like gas, etc. In the city of Salem some genius (Kate Brown? ) just announced free overnight camping in all city parks. WTF!! One of the more bone headed ideas I've ever heard of. Anyway....enough grouchiness on my part.

I hope your trip goes well, plan way ahead, arrive early, stay late and enjoy every minute of the experience.

Removing the back seats is easy

Quite honestly, it sounds like a lot of work. I'm going to be tying down as much to the roof rack as possible, and the roof top box is going to be loaded to the point of just being able to close and lock

It's not a lot of work. You need a socket wrench and a 12 mm, 14, mm and 10 mm socket as I recall. It takes me an hour to remove or reinstall. Might take 1 1/2 hours the first time you try it, as you figure out how the belts are layered in below the seats. Remove the swivels on both sides of the seat backs - one bolt each.

I take them out every time I go camping. Imagine the volume of those folded down seats being room for water and recovery gear. It lets you put the heavy stuff down low at the center of the car. You can sleep in the back a lot easier if you're tall (or not) by simply throwing your soft stuff, duffle bags of clothes etc., down over the dip behind the back seats. Makes a flat bed. There's no lift/bend up over the back seats when they're folded down. Take a sleeping bag pad for double the comfort.

Have you calculated your MAX distance between fill ups? You would probably be surprised how far you can venture... 8-10 gal extra seems excessive seeing as I carry max 4 gal extra.

I have not. The range display shows ~350 miles which I don't trust to begin with, but from the OR/CA border to the outskirts of Malheur NF is ~200 miles, then I have to get off road and find a camp. I don't expect finding a place to camp will be easy so i'm puttin' around for who knows how long.

I hope you (@Wrighter and [MENTION=67802]nglayton[/MENTION]) are wrong about the mess this is going to be, but I don't think you're far off. My wife and I talked about it, if at some point on the way there we feel it's just going to be a total fluster cuck, we'll go to a plan B and get as close as we can and find camp even if it's outside of the totality band. [MENTION=67802]nglayton[/MENTION], interestingly, I read or saw a video where it's said a solar eclipse happens about every year and a half but typically fall on the ocean or the deserts.

Yep, it will be packed pretty much to capacity. You're right though, the shape does limit what sized object I can keep in it, plus there's a weight limit as well. I'm keeping the light stuff in there (e.g., tent, sleeping bags, mats, etc).

It's 2 adults, 1 child. I don't pack to the brim on the inside. Typically, I keep the rear seat up, and we carry limited items there. The intention is to keep it less cluttered in the passenger seats so my daughter is comfortable, and my wife sometimes sits back there with her to keep her company. My daughter is going to be back there for 19+ hours, I would like her to be able to move around a little and get to her stuff to keep herself occupied.

Don't know if you have picked a spot yet to travel, but keep an eye out for closures. A large section of where many were looking to set up camp has been closed due to wildfire and will remain closed through 8/21.

For frame of reference, my last 75% off-road trip to Death Valley yielded about a 14mpg average rating (if you're in 2wd the majority of the time). I would check to see where your last fuel point will be, then where you're approximate campsite is, calc the milage in/out and up it by about 20% for good measure. This will be a good starting point for additional fuel that you'll need to carry, and it will help with whatever mount you will need. Try using Gaia GPS for a mapping tool to help you determine your routes and milages. Works wonders for me.

This has many campgrounds closed right now and I doubt they fires will be contained to the point where they re-open the camping and hiking trails before the eclipse......

This area is east of Salem in the path of totality or close to it.

Combine that with no measurable rain in the area for over 45 days and a week long stretch of over 100 degree temps...it's not looking great for any fire relief.

Edit....It rained today in Salem for a good 4-5 hours. So maybe things are looking up.

As others have mentioned, I found that you gain a lot of room just by taking out the bottom cushions of the second row (literally 4 bolts and/or 10 min job), and it creats a almost flat space. I fit a 2nd battery box and my fridge back there, and lots of room for luggage. I left the second row seatbacks in, mainly because they acted like a partition, and I am a lazy bastard because removing them and putting them back in would have been to much work for me...lol.
