Need to replace my catalytic converter....

I have a 2000 LTD 4Runner and the check engine light has been on and I need to pass NJ inspection. I went to Auto Zone and they tested it and it came up as the cat. I then took it to my trusted mechanic and he said, it's the cat. So, now I need to replace it. My mechanic said, he could do it for $500, but it would be cheaper for me to do it on my own.

Now, is this an easy thing to do. I have never replaced one before and I don't want to get in over my head. It looks like it's just a couple of bolts, but I've also heard of people having to weld them on???? I just did the 231mm brake upgrade, so if it's just as simple, then I think can handle it.

If it's as easy as bolting it on, then I should be able to handle it. Any thoughts on where to get one for a good price. I don't need it to be anything fancy. This truck is not an every day driver and I just need it to pass inspection. I've seen a couple on eBay for $150.

Any suggestions?

Ok DO NOT get an eBay 1. FIND A ROLLED OR WRECKED PART OUT ON CL
Taco (1st gen) or runner (3rd gen) buy the cat or whole exhuast (100 bucks max) our cats are "long life" so it's better than an eBay one... Take it muffler shop and have it welded in for like 10-15 bucks (just got mine done for 15 last week) and prob solved and still oem

Uhh

I was gonna help you out and do a little searching for you but what the **** is snj?

Wait, jersey, south??? Lemme check

Dont get an supposedly new ebay part. We have all seen threads where aftermarket CATs cause codes to be thrown.

The OEM cat is > $1000 so it isn't realistic to think a $150 ebay cat will work. The cars computer knows it isn't OeM specs.

I would first establish that it actaully is your CAT and then start calling junk yards. Or buy a used CAT off a scrapyard on ebay. Get one with < 100k miles.

Lots of quality used parts listed on ebay from wrecks.

Junk yards and scrap yards WILL NOT sell cats in Texas just FYI I don't know about anywhere else.

Thanks for the heads-up! This is the kind of information the average Joe (me) wouldn't know, nor would most mechanics tell you.

Problem is....how do you know how many miles are on a used CAT from a junk yard and whether or not it is any good?
