Need to replace my JBL unit...help please?

Hi,
so my 6disc changer in my 2004 4runner started to act crazy. It did not play any Cd's for the longest time and now it will not spit out the ones in it anymore.
Took it to the dealer and they suggested to get a new one because sending it to get fixed would cost more.
I read the thread about the switch some of you have done, but I must admit I have no clue when it comes to that stuff.
I would really like to figure this out and replace my changer since I am going on vacation soon and there is no way I am driving through 4 countries and spending my vacation without CD and only listening to the radio. Can I replace the unit with any other year other than 2004? Or does it have to be that specific one? I would not mind getting rid of the 6disc changer and having one disc and maybe possibly an ipod hook up. So who can point me in the right direction? Any help is appreciated

I am using the Toyota #16853 single disk JBL unit from an '04 or '05 4 runner and find it works well for me. This number is found just above the display on the radio. It appears that the single disk units are much more reliable from what I have seen posted here. I would look on Ebay for a unit with this specific number. If you have a 2004 original dash this unit fits seamlessly. For the Ipod adapter I recommend the USA Spec PA 15 Toy adapter. It sounds great and also charges your Ipod.
Have you tried the classified section on this forum? You may find the radio there as people are always changing out their systems.

I've got the urban runner and just replaced the HU so I have the original Toyota HU with Tom Tom Navigation, bluetooth that I would consider selling if you are interested. It's a single CD load.

It wont fit the 2004 dash.

Since I put in my ipod contoller that is all I use. I dont really care for the German radio stations, seems like all they play is U2 and Tina Turner lol. The AFN radio stations suck too. If you just want to spend like 70 bucks or so get an ipod controller nad if you have to have the CD player get another toyota JBL unit off of ebay for cheap that will plug right in.

I have been checking ebay and the classified's on here but like I said I am not the stereo whiz so the whole fitting it right is becoming a problem.
I know the number you are talking about drmorbius; I will try ebay with the number on the unit. I just looked up JBL units.
When it gets to the aftermarket stuff there is some nice stuff but don't the steering wheel controls stop working when you change something?
Since we are on that subject, if I just switch out my units I should not have to change anything concerning the steering wheel controls,or?

4runnerfourplay, where in Germany are you? Tried looking at your plate but cannot read it. If you are in Bavaria, yeah those stations suck, but around Ramstein/K-town we have a few good ones...otherwise I would be dying right now......
One last question..if I decide to do the ipod without changing the unit, how do I find the right hook up? And how does it hook up?

If you get another toyota HU make sure to get another JBL unit. If it were me I would get either a 6 disc or single disc JBL unit out of another toyota with an ipod controller and call it a day. Ipod controller is about 70 bucks or so, remove trim around radio, remove 4 bolts that hold in radio, plug in ipod controller into CD changer port, run your aux cable and done. Ipod controller installed. All you need to do to use it is press cd button twice and you are listening to the ipod.
If you do decide to get an aftermarket radio your steering wheel controls will be disabled. If you buy a pac-swi-x it will enable you to use your steering wheel controls with an aftermarket radio.
A couple of options for the ipod controller are just a simple auc input which you will control all ipod functions with the actual ipod (the unit I have)

i am running the usspec ipod interface on the UR HU..it works. it charges and stuff..but if your car sits for a long time the interface forgets its spot so you have to start over. im going to try and take it apart and adjust the settings so i can use the ipod functions too while its plugged in..otherwise it resets your settings. if you select a playlist it wont shuffle, even if you have shuffle selected it resets it. but overall it works good. cant expect it to work perfect i suppose

If you use the number I gave you everything just plugs in exactly like your original unit including the steering wheel controls.

Again, the Ipod adapter just plugs in to the rear of the head unit. The USA spec PA 15 Toy is made to fit Toyota radios and comes with easy instructions.
