Nerf bars/sliders you can stand on??

Our 2016 TEP came with the full on running boards which I hate but the wife likes. I think they are ugly, nerdy, are great for ripping skin from my shin and making my pant legs dirty when exiting the truck. She insists that they are useful and she uses them to get into the truck which I've never seen her actually do...

I've had my running boards removed from my FJ since about 2 hours after getting it home and never have had an issue getting in or out. I think they make is more difficult in a lifted truck actually.

Since it is technically HER daily driver, I'm going to try to compromise by adding sliders that either have a step attached which I don't really like or a set that stick out a bit or have some traction on them. I don't really like the shelf kind either that stick way out and have the steps filled in with traction plates or whatever they are called.

In the opinion of those who own sliders, does there exist a compromise that has enough surface exposed to step on but still look like sliders and not hang down 30 feet like the stock running boards? These will be used for stepping and aesthetics as the truck is a mall crawler and snowmobile as it is used currently so I'm not as concerned with strength or functionality as a true rock slider.

I have shrockworks sliders and my GF doesn't have any issues using them as a step. However, there are other sliders that stick out more and are probably better for doubling as a step.
 
Rockyroad supersliders are a good compromise. Stick out a little and can barely be used as a step. I have them- they are tough as hell too.

Or just get NFab nerf bars.
 
Our rock sliders are designed to be hi-clearance and fit tight to the body while also providing a flat grippy stepping surface. From a strength standpoint They are overbuilt for your needs, but they are functional as a step and have the appearance of a slider. Plus you can get our step pads with custom text option that has the "Trail" logo to go with your trail model 4runner.

I have the nfab steps that serve a purpose and look good IMO, I would love to get some C4 Fabs with the trdpro plate, but based on what you wrote brother...abort mission
 
Domello Rock Sliders

I have the standard Domello rock sliders (no tread) and they are great for body protection when rock crawling. They're easy to use as a step. Once you put them on you have to step up on them because it places your feet and legs out farther from the door sill. And yes, they'll get your pant legs dirty if you don't step down on them.
Those C4 sliders look great.
The stock running boards are damage enhancers. If you ever pivot the truck on them they will bend up into your rocker panel and cause more body damage than if you didn't have them.
 
No protection needed at all? NFab.

Otherwise - research the hundreds of threads on sliders on here. Several that have nice steps to them.

The same with the N fab steps. They will hurt your truck more if you rub or land on something.

I have Metaltechs. Your pants will get get hit a bit, part of the game with true sliders, this will hold true with all brands. Mine work as a step as well.


Maybe some electric steps will work for you. The disappear when the doors close and give you a step without looking lame like a running board. Some function, give your wife the steps she wants and not there for looks. Those sound more useful for what your asking.

BudBuilt's sliders are outstanding. I have the bump-out beefy ones.

A few weeks ago I was hit on the passenger side by a Honda Accord. His entire front bumper was smashed and ripped off his car. I had a few light scratches on the outermost coating of the paint on the sliders. That's it. lol.

I was so impressed that I called Bud to thank him.

That said, these are rock sliders. They're also great as steps, but the height is barely below the level of the footwell, so if she's already complaining about the height to get in, these may not be ideal for your situation.

Maybe find some running boards that dont sit as low and/or are lower profile than oem. I dont think sliders will be low enough to appease the Mrs. Im eyeing the deezee nxc boards another member posted. They dont offer any protecttion but look narrower than stock with a sufficient step surface.
