Never ending ordeal

If you have money to spare, I would say to set the caster to something lower. I am really amazed that you're able to get 4* with stock UCA.

Based on my research here, it seems like it's very common and recommended.

These posts are starting to make me worried now about dropping it down now lol

Will any harm be done if I kept it at 4?

I hope this gives you some insight. It may be what's causing the issues but I'm not an expect but worth a try. Usually increasing caster will change toe and camber to a certain degree. I find it odd that you have 4* with near perfect toe/ camber.

Max caster with stock control arms and lift?

This is my recent alignment outcome. w/ 2-2.25" front lift, 1" rear and Camburg Ball Joint UCA's.

Apparently the Toyota dealers don't deal with tire warranties. They tell to go deal with the tire manufacturer.

I had vibration problems with the stock Dunlop AT20 tires. The dealer balanced them like 4 times over the course of a year. Finally they decided the tires are bad but they don't tire warranties. They gave me the service record that states the tires are bad and need to be replaced. With that service record, I opened a claim with Goodyear and they approved it. They said I could pick any Dunlop or Goodyear tire so I got Goodyear Ultra Terrains installed. But now I have another set of problems that I don't want to derail this thread with. :(

Hmm, I bought Ultra Terrains about a month ago, so far no problems but would be interested in the problems you're having? I have a slight vibration at around 30-35 but nothing drastic, taking back to Discount Tire next week to check balance on front tires. I have a 2000 LTD with 113,000 mi.

Thanks!

Right after getting them mounted and balanced, the whole truck had violent shaking on the freeway. I took it back for rebalancing it’s still about the same. I took it to another America’s Tire that has a road force balancer. Much better but still has steering wheel shake. I’m not convinced the tires are bad, but just poor balancing jobs causing this. Every time they they rebalanced the tires, the weights are at different locations so this tells me their balancing job is not accurate. Might be due to poor centering on the balancer. I found a place that has the Haweka adapter so I’m going to try them.

Just my 2 cents.

I would leave your alignment for now.

Rock 36 PSI. I'm at 36 PSI at 81 degrees this morning and I'm not worried about wearing out the centers. The door jab says 33 and I got significant outside wear over the last year running that. I tried 40 but that seemed overkill. 35-38 seems like the sweet spot (at least on my stock POS tires). You should notice your steering is a bit tighter and the front feel a bit more responsive.

I say play with the pressures. See what issues you still have. Put miles down and give the wallet a break.

I hope the OP doesn't mind me sharing my experience in this thread instead of starting a new one. This seems like the central thread for this issue.

It looks like my ordeal is better but not completely over yet with my Goodyear Ultra Terrains.

So this morning I took it to a mom & pop type shop that has a Hunter road force balancer and the Haweka adapter.

Good news:
3 tires balance good. 9, 9, & 16lbs of road force after force matching to get the lowest road force. The lowest road force tires put to the front and no more steering wheel shake at all. I'm totally not used how the steering wheel doesn't shake anymore :)

Bad news:
1 bad tire. It has 41lbs of road force. It's so bad that it couldn't be force matched. So this is still causing the rest of the vehicle to shake that can be felt in the seats. Now I have to get America's Tire to replace this bad tire.

It goes to show you have to find a competent shop that knows how to road force balance with the Haweka adapter. It sucks I had to pay another shop to figure this out, but I coudnl't afford to waste any more time after numerous rebalancing from America's Tire.

shake..shake.. shake...

I have pro wheels on 19TRDORP with General Grabber ATX P. Here is my experience, my wheels shake shows up when I first start driving and then disappears after tires warm up.

Not saying there is not a design issue with the steering in our trucks. I think in a bunch of cases, it is "flat spotting" as 4runner is pretty heavy. In the original post, his tires started shaking after he dropped tire pressure. That would make sense to me.

Thanks for sharing your story, unfortunately I've called well over 20 shops by now and none of them have the adapter. Even the mom and pop shop I went to which specializes in Toyotas, dont have it.

So today I did a road trip to California and drove several hundred miles. First time driving the T4R for that amount of miles.

Before leaving I pumped tires up to 36psi, and had zero wobble. Completely gone.

However the high frequency vibration was still there and it drove me nuts!! Kept putting my hands to sleep and I had to constantly keep switching between hands for the entire trip.

Weird thing is that sometimes it would completely go away even at the same speed, and same stretch of highway, and then it would return and be really bad.

I dont know what to make of it but this trip has me seriously considering getting rid of this vehicle.

Sad because I do love it.

Thanks to everyone so far who has giving me feedback.

I think not using the Haweka adapter is your problem with the lingering wobble and high frequency vibration. Have you called any Toyota dealers to seee if they have one? Technically they are supposed to have one.

I question how accurate your road force measurements are without the adapter.

The America’s Tire I went to that had a road force balancer but no Haweka adapter claimed the the road force was in spec on all of the tire even though they didn’t note down the measurements. When I went to the mom & pop shop that have both the road force balancer and Haweka adapter, it showed 3 tires with excessive road force. 2 tires had 30lbs and 24lbs respectively were able to be force matched down to 9 lbs. The 3rd one with 41 lbs was too high and couldn’t be force matched.

Now I have to call Goodyear again to make another claim because America’s Tire won’t replace it without their authorization since they paid for the original replacements.

The mom & pop tire shop told me Goodyear has the worst defect rates in AT tires and BFG & Toyo have the lowest so maybe that’s something to consider.

I had the same problem when I purchased my trd pro. Steering wheel shake at 60mph when first started driving and it will go away after the tires warmed up. Changed to 285/70/17 duratrac. Problem solved. So I think the problem was the Nittos

My 2017 TRD Pro with 3 miles on the ODO pulled hard right as soon as I picked it up. Also exhibited excessive steering wheel vibration between 55-60mph.

Switched to KO2s (265s, 275s, and 285s) and the pulling + vibration continued. Toyota wouldn't do anything about it and blamed it on the tires. I had road force balancing done 4 or 5 times and it didn't really change anything. I also tried multiple tire pressure combinations, tire rotations, etc.

Ever get it fixed?

Anybody have a GoPro to mount under the running board to record where the wheel mounts to the truck? It might be a loose tie rod, or some other steering component.

If you take the front skid plate off, the steering shaft is right by the inner tie rod I believe. Maybe the U joint on the shaft is a little funky. I would record that as well if I got a GoPro.

I didn't read the whole thread but I was sort of following your other one.

Have you ever tried new rims? Sound like you tried everything else.

Thanks for the update, appreciate it!
Got tied up with an ABS light issue and yet to get back to Discount Tire to check the balance on the tires. Did get on interstate for extended drive with no problems or vibration. My vibration is only at around 34-35 mph, and then it's not violent or anything but annoying.

Thanks again.

Check propeller shaft bolts, re-torque them. Also, make sure the spiders are greased. I've heard of this causing driveline vibrations as well. Worth a try, though I believe it's a balancing issue.

The best solution is not easy. And Toyota won't do it. That's frustrating. The proper fix is to increase the spring rate on the internal feedback bushing in the steering rack. Lexis will replace the spring under a TSB but Toyota will not. On earlier 4runner models it was accessible but now it requires removing three steering rack. Anyway, if you want a permanent fix - that's the best way. Maybe your dealer would do the work?

So what exactly needs to be tweaked or replaced? Can you give me more info...what to buy/how to fix?
Thanks!
