Never owned one before, but lookin'. Suggestions?

Hi Gang,
I'm going to have to replace my '88 Pathfinder very soon and the guy next door says I should consider the 4Runner. So far, it looks like the '95 or so, V6, 5speed 4x4 will fit my needs very nicely.

Would anyone here have suggestions what to look for, check out, avoid?

I know tons about 2nd Generation RX7, but absolutely NUTHIN' about the 4Runner...'cept that the neighbor guy says they're really fine vehicles and hold up well over the years,

They are really fine vehicles. Can't go wrong.

95 is the last year of the 2nd gen 4runners. the 3.0 v6 in the 2nd gens are gutless and unreliable. known for head gasket failures.

I would highly recommend looking at 3rd gens (96-02) the 3.4 v6 in those are much stronger and more reliable.

Take a look at this thread if you do decide on 3rd gens.
Since you are looking at 5speeds, you can ignore the strawberry milkshake thing.

Thank You Rips! This is exactly what I was looking for. Good to know about the gen change at 95-96.

Funny thing, I could say some of the same stuff about the first generation to second generation RX.

Thanks to Mike for input too. (the '95 fits my budget better, but '96s aren't too much more around here)
