New 06 Sport owner without service records w/ 83K, recommended maintenance?

Just bought an 06 with 83K and not sure exactly what services have been completed. Looking at the maintenance guide spark plugs, oil, propeller shaft are the major things with the differential and transmission fluids checked? What would you guys recommend I get done on it to make sure it is running well?

I bought mine with about that. I just had all the fluids changed for peace of mind.

I'd replace all fluids/filters, lube the drive-line, and check/replace the spark plugs. Aside from that, test your anti-freeze, maybe test the battery if it's still the original, and begin enjoying!

I switched to Mobil 1 in the diffs, transfer case, and run 5W-30 Mobil 1 with the OEM oil filters.

I recently bought mine with 100,000 on it.

I replaced all the fluids, spark plugs, air filter, and have been enjoying it!

Pretty good advice here. Replacing the oil and filter are a must for me even when the dealer says they changed them. Check the spark plugs to see if they need to be replaced. Check the engine air filter.

Fluids in the diffs and transfer case would be nice. I don't think there's an official service interval for them unless you tow. And if there's a tow hitch on your 4Runner you can't know if it was used for towing or not. There's a guide how to do this yourself if you want to. It's here.

FYI: Have the dealer do the transmission fluid. You have to pump it out to get all the fluid in the torque converter AND the stuff in the pan.

TIP: Always make sure you can get a fill plug off before pulling the drain plug (axles, etc.)

Yes, I did this myself, but don't have any threads or anything about the process. It's a drain and refill process... overall, pretty straight forward, but there are some challenges when trying to refill due to difficult access so do yourself a favor and buy one of those hand pumps! You can find them at your local auto parts store, usually near the gear oil.

FYI: Have the dealer do the transmission fluid. You have to pump it out to get all the fluid in the torque converter AND the stuff in the pan.

TIP: Always make sure you can get a fill plug off before pulling the drain plug (axles, etc.)

I've heard mixed reviews on the tranny "power flush"... some say that they use a higher pressure than what the tranny normally sees and can damage seals and blow debris around inside. Mine got a "drain and refill" at the local dealer for that very reason... no, you don't get it all, but the fluid in mine with about 75k miles on it looked very good and was even just about the same color as the new fluid.

Excellent tip! Always take the fill plug out (or at least loosen) before you attempt to remove the drain plug! This way, you know for certain that you can replace the fluid and it also reduces the "glug, glug, glug" when you drain so you're not as likely to make a mess!

Couple of things...

Changing all the fluids is a good thing. You never no what the service was...even if there are records.

Good idea to at least look at the air-filter...You can tell if it's dirty. Very easy job.

OEM filters?? Any decent aftermarket filter is fine. Toyota doesn't make their filters..They are made for them by one of the filter manufacturers. Denso, Wix and even Fram make oil and air filters for Toyota.

Tranny service - Either the dealer or a good independent tranny shop (stay away from places like AAMCO). Any decent tranny shop will have the equipment and expertise to service the tranny. And in many cases they have far more experience and expertise then the dealers.

I'd just change the plugs. Not worth the hassle to pull and inspect. You could just pull one, but that doesn't mean the rest are fine. Just replace now so you have a good starting point for future service. Get either Denso or NGK. My choice is NGK...Excellent plug and easier to find.

Change your radiator fluid also. Start fresh and keep it that way.
