NEW 2003 4Runner

Hi all,

New to this forum. But been reading for awhile.

While I was away for 3 weeks (work) my wife bought me the 2003 4 Runner (limited, V8, X-REAS). We have been looking for the last 13 months at them. What a surpise after being away for 3 weeks.

I Love my new 4 Runner.

My question is, (It has been discussed before) the rotten egg smell. I have seen the map of the states that regulated the gas and NJ is one of them. But, I still have the smell problem.

The dealer did fill up the tank before she drove it off the lot. There is a Super WA-WA gas station next to the dealer, and most likely filled it there. Does anyone else on this forum live in NJ? If so, what gas station do you fill up at? I guess the dealer used 87.

P.S.: darn it, you're a lucky man to have a loving wife like that! Uhh, does she have a single sister who's just as nice???:biggrin2:
 
Usually the smell will persist until the engine is broken in fully. The problem is because auto mfg's try to make their vehicles very emissions friendly and thus overdoes their specs and you get the lovely egg smell. Just give it some time and let the vehicle break in everything and you should be fine.

If it still persists, then you're pretty much stuck with it :(. This is not the only vehicle that has this problem. Alot of other auto mfg's have the same issue so it's nothing we can do much about. I have heard that the lexus twin is worse than the 4runner.
 
My V8 Sport Ed. is 3400 miles or so, nearly two-three months that I've had it and I can't smell any sulfur. I live in SoCal where it also uses reformulated gas. I can't remember smelling any sulfur when I was in the break-in period and I alternated between 91 and 87 octane.

Give it time and you won't smell it either.
 
I live in central NJ. Bought mine 3 weeks ago. I haven't smelled any sulfer yet. I normally fill up at Raceway gas.

My wife and I have been looking for the last 13 months (lease), but coudn't get a good offer from dealers in the area. Last week she over heard a co-worker asking if anyone knows of a car being for sale and that is how it all started. She sold the Honda for $6,000 (108,000 miles). The dealers where not going to give us the 6,000 that we needed, they where giving us 4,500 for trade in value. So she bought the 4 Runner with help from her boss (dealing with the sales person)

So, she surprised me with it on Saturday.

Shore Toyota in Mays Landing. Yeah, I would recommend them. My luck, my wife took her boss. He really did a good job dealing with them
 
Our '03 V8 produces the sulfur smell too. I did not notice it for the first 3,000 miles or so (winter), then it became offensive (summer). Lately, I haven't noticed it much (fall). I think your perception of the smell has to do with how much you drive with the windows down after accelerating smartly, more than the age of the vehicle or the gas you put in it. Just a theory...
 
That's strange...did you change out your catalytic converter?? Oh yeah, does the Borla exhaust point to the side or straight back (like stock)??

Nope I still have the same catalytic converter.
The Borla points to the sides, but still there is
no smell even if you sniff the exhaust.
 
Not to hi-jack the thread, but I was wondering how much resonance is heard in the cab with Borla exhaust?
