Well I was looking at a few different 4x4s to build and I decided to go ahead and get a 2nd gen because its a 4runner and there are a ton of fairly clean ones available ones here in So Cal.
I ended up getting a black 93 SR5 that was originally auto but converted to 5speed manual. I lucked out because it. has 4.88 gears, but that's where the luck ran out. It was dirty as hell inside and leaking all over. Thankfully it didn't overheat at all though
The price was decent at 1800 for a running car that had the coolant system completely replaced. It had 29" tires up front and 31"s in the back that were all shot and dry rotted. I think the truck sat for a long time. The shifter was so sloppy I actualy pulled this shift lever out of the socket while getting it into 5th on the freeway. There was a bunch of broken parts on the shift lever.
Here is a pic of it as it sits now with all the fixes and new tires
So far I've done the following things
-33x12.5x15 BFG KM2s
-Replaced all Fluids except front diff (will be done soon)
-Rebuilt Power Steering Pump
-Replaced all shift lever components that were worn and broken
-Replaced rear pinion seal
-Aligned the front end
-Replaced valve cover gaskets
-Replaced Cat with brand new CARB magnaflow unit
-Removed all cargo area carpeting
-Installed Driver seat cover and steering Wheel cover
-Cut vent holes in the hood
-Fabricated new transmission tunnel shift lever cutout
-Removed stupid rear spoiler
and a ton of other small things. So far I'm about 2800 into this project and I think it is almost up to reliable driving condition. This has been a fun project so far in the two weeks that i've owned it and I plan to keep going with it to make it a fun trail rig for the whole family. I'll be putting a new tube bumper in the rear as the next mod as long as I don't find any other major mechanical issues that need to be addressed.
When I first drove this thing home it was leaking everywhere so sealing it up became the first priority. Now I have it all sealed up and I'll start fine tuning from here on in.
Next mods
-FJ cruiser rear springs
-BJ spacers up front
-New shocks all around
-Rear tube bumper and hitch removal
-Manual front hubs
Stay tuned .. I'll be keeping up with steady if not rapid progress on this thing
