New 3rd gen owner from CA

Hi guys! Just bought my first 4runner - a one-owner '97 limited with 188k miles on it. I'm stoked as its previous owner made sure it has a flawless exterior - no taps or dents in 20 years. Had it inspected at a mechanic's prior to buying it, and was told it was in great condition.

I knew it was time for a new timing belt and water pump when I bought it, but I did not expect the check engine light to come on the second day I was driving it... I had three codes come up when I plugged in my code reader: P0300, P0301 and P0303. General and cylinder specific (1 and 3) misfiring codes. I was a little deflated at first, thinking this could be a long and expensive journey. But thanks to all of you who have been posting here about misfiring codes and potential diagnoses, I decided to change the plugs and wires (all original!!) first and so far (300 miles) the codes have not come back...

So thanks again for being so knowledgeable, can't wait to start modding my rig!

There are so many 3rd gens down here, but there are also many bad ones.. I've been looking since Christmas. But it definitely paid off waiting for a good one to come along!

WAITING IS KEY!! I did for almost 6 months and it paid off big time. I just picked up my first third gen a 2000 sr5 with 117 on it, perfect inside and out.

Sometimes it is just the obvious things that need replacing. Reminds me of my ford. I was sitting idling at a light in 100 degree heat and the car started shaking. Ignition module went out and the heat was separating the electrical connection. Luckily I was able to put 2+2 together.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I'm planning on sanding down and repainting my fender flares and cladding. I'm leaning towards white for the repaint, any input? Stick with grey? Switch to white??

All white could be cool. I'd want to see the chrome grill and bumpers in white too.

Hey! It was listed at $4200, but I got it for $3k. Immediately had to replace timing belt, water pump, plugs, wires, tires and alternator though!
