New 4R 4x4... V6 or V8

One other thing. As far as handling goes. Don't worry. I drove my 03 4Runner SR5 4x4 fully loaded with two dogs from Atlanta Ga. to Anchorage Alaska last fall through all kinds of weather to include rain and snow. The thing ran flawlessly and handled smoothly the whole tripe. These SUV's are great. I was so impressed that I sold my Subaru and bought another 03 4Runner (this time a limited). They are very comfortable on long trips! Try 10 days...
Good luck and enjoy the ride!

My V6 rattles a bit when cold but when at temp idling it is very smooth. No vibration at all. Plenty of power and I got the Limited with the tow package so it has a trans cooler. Best way to go IMO is the V6 Limited with the JBL & leather. Nice stock wheels too. :)

Plus it has a fine vibration from around 1500 rpm to 1900 or so which is most of the time off the freeways. It seems a little worse after I lifted it, but the driveline clunk is gone after the lift so I guess it evens out.

Yes, the infamous 1500-1900 vibration in the V8. I have it on my 2007 V8 Sport and it's a design/engineering mistake that was never corrected or improved upon by Toyota even after repeated requests by multitudes of frustrated customers.

The driveline clunk that was supposedly FIXED by Toyota 5000 miles ago... has since returned to its original clunky and irritating form.

These two problems in the V8 4th generation design are totally unlike 'past' Toyota engineering and build quality.

Other than a fine vehicle, these two problems have raised doubts in me re: Toyota's lack of attention to overall quality.

I think Toyota could probably fix the 1500-1900 vibration with a better designed motor mount although at this stage of the game I don't think they will. AS for the clunk. As I said mine went away when I put the OME lift on. Neither seem to hurt the life of the vehicle but both are very annoying. All in all I'm pretty happy with my 4runner and just live with these annoyances. I've owned other vehicles that have much more annoying things that went on.

We have done the V8 vs. V6 in many threads, which usually ends up with hurt feelings. What I find interesting in this thread is that he can't find the 09's and there are still 08's out there. I noticed in the paper other compaines are still selling the 08's.

I would think they would have to give me a really great deal to buy a car that is over a year old.

Peoples feelings being hurt over V6 vs V8. How silly is that? I would hope people on these forums would have thicker skin than that. Keep smiling all. It's only an engine.

I have an 07 v8 4wd now. Had an 06 4wd v6. Got rid of the v6 because the trans shifted up and down a lot looking for power. I think I was spoiled from my v8 Tundra. I really like the oil filter location on the v6 for the do it yourselfers.

Not all V6's have 2WD & 4WD.

I am not sure what you are trying to say here???

All V6 4WD 4th Gen 4Runners have the Multimode 4WD system which allows 2WD or 4WD. All Trim Levels.

I have 2 4th Gens, a 04 2WD SR5 V6 and a 08 4WD SE V6.

The V8 4th Gen 4WD has never had the option of the multimode 4WD system. It is 4WD all the time.

All 4WD 4th gens have the option of locking the center diff.

The V-6 4WD has the AAD (Automatic Axle Disconnect) which allows the front axle to spin freely, Kind of. The spider gears still spin from the left axle shaft being driven by the road/left tire. The front driveshaft does not spin when 2WD is selected.

Think he was just saying that you can get a Forerunner - with only 2 wheel drive also. Not relevent to my needs because I'm looking for a platform that will become a super 4x / daily driver - emphasis on the 4x first.

The free wheelin aspect of the 6cylinder is attractive. As long as it doesn't lug too much under load - I'll be good to go.

Anyone taken a V6 4x4 transfer case and adapted it into the V8 4r?

You Would not get the same benefit unless you also swapped out the front axle w/ the one from a V6 with the AAD. I believe the Transfer case ase basicly the same anyway.

Just wanted some clarification when I buy my V6 or V8 T4R:

Keep in mind that the V8 needs a timing belt at 90K miles. . .

. . . The V6 is easier to maintain . . . Yes...no timing belt to deal with . .

^^ So, the V6 has a timing chain or something else, and not a timing belt that the V8 has?
