New 4R: Wear the Dunlops Out or Trade Up to Revo's Right Away?

I've been reading a lot of threads on here about tires and Revos and all sorts of good stuff. I've also been poking around quite a bit at TireRack and reading up on all sorts of tire-related things.

My question is this: Do you recommend driving from the dealer to a tire store and selling the Dunlops to them brand new and putting Revo's on right away....or is it smarter to drive the Dunlops into the ground and then upgrade to the Revos?

How much do tire stores typically give for the new Dunlops? It seems like I saw someone say $200 total somewhere.

Just wear them out. Between my last two 4runners I've put 60k on the Dunlops and I haven't had a problem. If you find they don't meet your driving style, then dump 'em. Just my two cents.

If you can get money (Any) for the Dunlops, cut your losses and trade up. If not you can get 20K decent miles out of them.

...my general nature would be to drive the dunlops into the ground, but some of the reviews i've read on them are kinda disappointing...

I plan to get Revos in August. I'll have about 22k on the Dunlops. They have been fine so far, even in some deep snow. But I'm not taking a chance this winter. I don't want to find out the hard way I need new tires.

I have no regrets driving on them. I got more than $200 use out of them.

thanks bluto -- that sounds like great advice....that's a good way to think about it...whether or not you got $200 out of them, cuz I doubt you could get anymore from a tire store for them....

I drove straight to the tire shop when I got my '06 and traded in my Dueler H/Ts for some Dueler Revos. When I left, I had to pay $280 for the new tires, which included mounting, balancing and tax.

I'll trade to a different tire when I wear out the Dunlops. Right now I have 45,000 miles on them and they look like they are good for another 8-10 thousand. They are not a great off road tire but have been decent in the rain and the snow on the pavement. Which is were the truck is actually at 98% of the time. I had Revo's on my Dodge p/u and were very happy with them.

I have 25k on my Dunlops and have done plenty of beach driving and haven't had an issue. I can't wait to get new ones but only when these wear out.

Wow that's a pile of mileage outta those things.....I'm lucky to get 20 - 30,000kms out of stock tires.

If I were doing it all over again, I'd see if I could get a good deal on tires right at the dealer. I know we gave some 1/2 decent money for brand new Dunlop take-offs, and then you can get the vehicle looking how you want it right off the bat.

zeppelin, it all depends on your needs. You live in Texas...therefore, no snow. If you don't off-road much, then i would advise you to stick with the Dunlops until they wear. Use your money on something else...other upgrades. No need to throw out the Dunlops when they are still new. Save the money to get that black leather interior that you want!

If you off-road, then i would consider heavier duty tires (REVOs, Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor, or BFG AT KO).

I drove the Dunlops about 15K miles before I lost confidence in them. Then I traded to Revos.

My dunlops were trash by 25k. I went with the Nitto TerraGrapplers and it was like night and day difference in every aspect.
