New BFG AT KO speed rating

My KOs purchased in early '05 were listed on the BFG website as 265/70/17C with a load/speed rating of 112Q. On the actual tire sidewall it shows 112/109 Q. The website now lists the tires as having an R speed rating (112R) with every other designation remaining the same. An email from BFG was predictably vague. I still don't know if the tire, itself, has changed or only the "paperwork". To anyone willing to look, I'm curious what is printed on the side of your KOs, especially recent ones. How does it compare to the 112/109 Q on the sidewalls of mine?

Well, I've sometimes been a bit concernced about the 99mph speed rating considering I might do 85mph for long stretches in 110 degree heat. I'll be ready for new tires soon and I'm curious if they've been improved or just re-assigned a letter.

It's not just paperwork. The tire has changed because the old MSPN # 46621 is changed to # 12665. As to what has changed, not sure. At a minimum they changed the mold to update the 112R speed rating. My guess is they improved the casing (belts) in order to improve the rating.

Speed rating are based on sustained speeds (Hours). There is no problem exceeding speed ratings for short periods of time. This is based on a tire that has been maintained, not an old tire that the recommended air pressure has not been kept up. Low air pressure is a tire killer.

Mine have the 112R rating on the sidewall.. It really doesn't bother me whether this is Q or R as I would not take something this top heavy over 100 mph for any extended interval anyway (and rarely any speed over 85). I think when the changed the composition of the tires, they increased the speed rating from Q to R.

I personally think those kind of speeds on that kind of tire would not be good / safe to begin with ( not knocking your skills at all JB ) .

Just wondering if there are BFG all terrains ko's without the snowflake. If so, common sense would suggest the snowflake would have better traction in snow, but what's different than the one without the snowflake. I'm comparing between these and Revo's and would like to know. Thanks!

Actually it has. BFG has been touting this all last year that the changed the compound to make it quieter and more durable. I don't believe the construction has changed overall, but the big news last year was the addition of the "dual-compound" tread.

What did they do to the compound ? It already is tough tire , but wondering if they went with something like the Revos did , or the GY SA did so supposedly when the tire wears the traction somewhat stay the same , but more importantly the ride. My Revos that have pros/cons like everything still do exceptional in the rain and the ride is is still nice , so is milage.

My last few sets of BFG's were really hard riding after they wore down.

I don't think they make the AT without the snowflake/Mountain .

I have been trying to find a link on line about this. If you do a google search for bfgoodrich at ko tires you will see many mention the newer compound. The BFG website does not specifically mention the new compound, but does show the dual compound feature:

One thing the dealer (tire dealer) told me was that these tires were better on most surfaces, but I should seriously consider rebalancing annually and possibly getting an alignment check every year. Based on the weight and type of tire, I think this is probably not a bad idea. So far, I have not noticed any appreciable decrease in mileage from the original dunlops.

I talked to a bunch of people about these tires and although most had great things to say the first year, they said the second year they had some slipping in the snow and rain... Not sure if it was due to driving style or the tire... Between the BFG and Revo it was a very close decision. Probably the one of the deciding factors was that 2 of my dunlops has nails in them and they had the BFG's in stock, the Revo's had to be ordered. Also the BFG's are 2 pounds lighter than the Revo's (I can't figure that one out either).

Thanks. Exactly the kind of thing I was trying to find out and it makes me re-think my plan of buying 3 and swapping an unused spare. Amazing that using this forum produced better info than emailing BFG.

JB - I have been off-roading with friends with the BFG tires (mostly on Jeeps) a few years before and I can honestly say that the newer tires are much improved in the materials and road manners than they used to be. Granted I only have 1000 miles on these, but they stick well, they are very quiet (yes you get some road noise because of the depth of the tread, but it isn't intrusive at all). They balance well, ride well, and last a long time.

Based on what?? Some on here mentioned that REVOs don't do well in snow...so, where is your basis?? I hope that you do have something more concrete to back up your statements than in the past, Koz. Also, explain to everyone here why the REVOs do not have the snowflake symbol while other Bridgestone tires do.

No rubbing, even at full lock.

No lift, but planning either OME or Daystar (since I don't do any hard core off-roading - mainly beach stuff)

best part - no slipping on snow/rain and even very good traction on ice.
