Hey guys just joined this forum. I have a few questions so bare with me. First off i just bought a 1999 4runner highland edition, with the rear diff lock and 4x4 high and low. Its got 179k on it. The body is mint some little dings and scratches nothing I really car about. The brakes, tires, timing belt, oil, filter, is all new so i thought it was a good buy.

Unfortunately I have only had it for a week now and had many problems with it. First off the cel came on with the p0440 code. I know its not a huge deal after looking it up, but I dont even know where to start. I checked the gas cap, and filler tube when I filled it up. So any imput on that would help. other than that i drove the car prob 10 min from my house yesterday filled her up then as soon as i go to leave absolutely dead. I assume its a bad connection or terminal because i jumped it and drove it to work. after a day of work it started right up. I was just wondering if these were common problems and i did not buy a pos.... also i read that alot of e-brakes freeze is this true? i know its an older car with lots of miles but i read they last forever. hopefully i did not buy a **** box, and its worth fixing up. Please let me know any info im sure it will help.

Nothing sounds too serious to me. A loose battery connection, a loose vacuum hose or pcv.

I hadn't heard of the e-brake freeze before, but perhaps someone else has.
If you take care of it, it has a lot of life left. Don't let the the buyer's remorse phase you. You'll come to love it.:cheers:

alright cool thanks, i mean like i said its old and needs some work, the code just kinda pisses me off cuz i cant find what it is. also how bad is your gas milage ive driven it two days 50 miles and im down a quarter tank i know there big suvs but still thats awefull, idk if thats something to do with the cel light as well

While mileage varies a BUNCH by how you drive, (aggressive starts, extra weight, city vs highway etc.) most stock runners get 15-21 mpgs. I've seen 12 mpgs on a tank while towing, and I got 24 mpgs in pure highway. The cause of the CEL could very well be making you run inefficiently.

There are several threads about increasing mpgs on here. Use the search feature. Most common things that people do are clean the MAF and throttle body, new plugs and wires, Seafoam treatment, change the fuel filter, and the deckplate mod.
 
Man, that sucks to hear about people getting surprised about problems/codes immediately after sale. It is too easy to clear the codes right before a buyer shows up and then again right before they take delivery.
The codes usually take two trips of getting up to temperature for a certain period of time before they reappear.
Hopefully your P0440 will be an easy fix. The dead battery should be easy to diagnose as well if it really is a problem.
The e-brake definitely is on the list of known problems with these trucks. My driver side bell crank is frozen, but my passenger side is fine. The problem is that there is an aluminum bracket that corrodes easily and freezes up.
I just whack the bellcrank back down with a hammer to its free position against the drum backer plate and remember to not use the e-brake. Easy if you have an auto, not so easy if you have a manual.

yeah the e-brake is not a big thing right now except for inspection. the truck is auto so it should not be a huge deal. as for the cel and the horrible gas milage is the things that worrie me. i was planning on useing seafoam to clean it out but i herd it was awefal for the cats. does anyone know where to start to look for the p0440 code??? thanks
 
Finish a full tank before you start to worry about the gas mileage. My needle consistently drops to 3/4 full after 50 miles but I always end up at about 20mpg for mixed driving (manual transmission). For whatever reason the gauge seems to move faster at the beginning of the tank.

Yeah, this is a common known issue. Toyota actually issued a fix for it, but it is expensive and pretty involved. I just got a scangauge and say sod the stock gauge.
 
First let me take this time to beat you over the head with my tire iron for lucking into the holy grail of 4 Runners (99 Highlander Elocker).

Congrats on the find, hopefully it wont be much of a problem to get ironed out and running tip top.
 
I have somewhat frozen e-brake, and I just park in reverse when I'm on a hill, it holds fine, if I'm concerned I'll get a wheel choke, which I've never needed.

yeah im not worried about it but i need to get it inspected idk if it will pass inspection with no e-brake ya know???

I should up and offered 4,300 cash and i took it away. not a bad deal (i think)/ i hope. so any info will be helpfull!! thanks
