New exhaust and Intake my V8

I had Flow Master exhaust put on several weeks ago and then on Sat I put on the Volant CAI. the exhaust is a custom bent, hidden tail pipe with a 50 series Flow Master. The CAI is the standard Volant CAI. I have to be honest, I do not like the Volant CAI.....too loud, and too many openings for water to get in. I plan on closing up the front hole in the box and then adding foam to fill the gap where the intake hose goes into the box. Right now, when I stomp on the skinny pedal, it sounds like I should have about 800 HP on tap......but alas..I do not.

First, most aftermarket "cold air intakes" suck more heat from the engine compartment than the stock setup. The stock intake usually flows enough air. The bottleneck usually is the throttle body so tubes bigger than that are not going to help. Also the silencers on the stock intake don't inhibit flow.

Did you go bigger tubes on the exhaust? If too big of tubes are used, the exhaust cant scavenge and it can cause a loss of low end torque.

When did you notice the lack of power? (after the exhaust or the intake)

Loud doesn't equal power (muffler or intake).
 
sounds good to me. your pipe is prob a 3in and i can tell u right now u might want to buy a maf cal fro urd cuz im pretty sure your fuel trims are all over.

Depends on the design of the OEM intake with the "aftermarket" one. You can only increase the VE so much without boost or modifying the heads and changing compression. Generally an open intake design like a K&N will not make more power until you reach a certain speed (both mph and engine speed) as compared to a sealed intake where intake temps are much closer to ambient air temps. Looking at the V8's oem intake compared to a 1GR or 5vz there is not much room for improvement.
 
I have tried several cold air intakes, and i have been wanting a TRD intake simply because it does not suck more air from inside the hot engine bay (i'm in Texas). The volant is a full ABS box including the elbow. it should prevent extra heat transfer you get from the shiny aluminum intake tubes people love to buy.

I know the air resonators "silencers" do not inhibit the air flow, the casting shape of the factory hose with the ribs in the bend can however affect the flow slightly.

I had new pipes from the muffler back bent. I went with 2.5 inch....you can loose low end torque when the pipe is so large the exhaust is displacing cooler/slower moving air...we are talking about a 4.7 here not an 8.4 i would have to use a 4"+ pipe to cause a noticeable drop in low end torque.

I have not noticed any lack of power to speak of, I also have not noticed any real increase. I just wanted to try out the intake to see if I liked it or not. I do not like the super loud intake noise but there is a cure for that.

I am very aware that sound is not power.....if that were the case i saw a 1200HP civic del-sol on 820 this morning..
 
As with most Toyota's. It's hard to get extra power out of these engines (other than force induction). The 2.5" sounds like a good call. The intake noise will be hard to get rid of without the factory silencers.

I did the intake tube from the stock box and it was loud (especially climbing the mountains). I also did the "free flow" type mufflers. I went back to the stock intake (with no power or MPG change) and a turbo style muffler (again with no power or MPG change).

I will hook my scanner to it tonight, i have a very nice scan tool (OTC EVO)
i will tell you that after the first start up, I let it run a little and it popped and sputtered and backfired even...but after about 2 min she was just fine.

now I am about 200 miles into it and I am not noticing any surging any more and it responds like stock.

Something that I cannot explain:....... I reset my MPG (it had been firmly stuck on 15.0 for months... (before I get chewed out..I know they are not accurate) but I wanted to see how much my MPG dropped. To my surprise after 213 miles it has balance out at 17.3... I was under the impression, if you increase air flow by any measure, the ECM would remap and deliver more fuel based on the volume of air. this would result in less MPG but a very slight gain in higher RPM HP. So I wonder if my truck is just more confused now or perhaps i am getting a bit better MPG???? I will do the math on the next tank of gas...

No problem!! Remember should be lookin at ftrm lt and st. they should be close to 0 a possible... The way i was taught was doing a 60 mph steady speed and then looking at it.. Idk what the tolerance i for the V8 but i know for V6 is +/- 7
 
I just had a Flowmaster 50 Series Big Block installed a couple weeks ago. I'm running the stock intake but using an Amsoil Filter. I barely hit the gas and the 4Runner kinda jumps now on take off. My muffler shop also replaced the stock y-collector with one that flows better. I had a Magnaflow 18" before the Flowmaster. So far it seems like I have a bit more torque now than before. My mileage doesn't seem to be any better now vs. the Magnaflow, but it's not any worse either. Well it might be a little worse in the city, it sounds Awesome!!

I'm running a 3" pipe from the collector to the muffler then a 2.5" pipe out to the tail pipe. I'll be taking it back on Friday to get the tail pipe routed out the side. Waiting on a nice tip to arrive.

I'm averaging about 15 mpg on this tank of gas, that's mostly city and hwy stop and go.

Also I'm running the Flowmaster without the resonator and it sounds great all around. Hardly any drone at hwy cruising speeds. I had the resonator removed when I had the Magnaflow and that thing was awful on the hwy. It droned like crazy, only took me a few days to get the resonator put back on.

I took the resonator off well before the flow master install...I have never given it a second thought. I really like he way mine sounds just around town. little rumble but not "DDAAANNNGGGGG" rumble if you get what I'm saying.

My Magnaflow cat-back exhaust was one of the best mods I have done...and my old Volant CAI not so much. I liked the sound and most of all the look when the hood was open, but the thing made my check engine light come on. My current stock air box with an AFE dry filter is working much better.
