New Falken AT tire (A/T3W)

Love them

Had a set installed a couple weeks ago. Love them! Ride great zero road noise. Haven't had a chance to go on any trails yet but from the research I did before purchase they are well rounded.

Bad vibrations...

So I went ahead and got the new Falken AT3W installed stock size. The tires look very nice and aggressive with a bit more noise than stock duelers. I was very hopeful that the balancing would go well, wishful thinking I guess. I had them mounted at Discount Tire with instructions to match the wheels and tires and perform road force balancing.

Here are the symptoms; the car shakes at 62 and I am hearing a buffeting sound as if there was cupping on one of the tires at lower speeds 40-50 mph. I also asked them to use the Haweka adapter when balancing but they did not know what that was. After two balancing attempts, I still have a shake in the entire vehicle including the steering wheel.

At a loss now on what to do next, take it to another tire shop or just go with a different tire altogether? But even with a different brand/tire, there is still no grantee that they balancing would be done correctly. Is my only option to take it to the dealer and have them do the balancing using the Haweka adapter? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have some shaking around 60mph +/- but just in the steering wheel. I know that .5 oz fell off when I was switching one wheel when they put my spare on instead of the one with TPMS. (I still have stock spare under the truck until I find a rear carrier that I like, or just break down and buy a bumper)

But enough of my explanation of my problems, I would call/email around if shops have dealt with some of these issues with other customers. Yelp has a pretty handy feature where if you contact one shop, you can send the same message to a number of others in the area. Maybe I dont get the unbalanced shakes because KDSS? :shrug:

That's a pretty common issue with the 5th gens. I honestly dont think it's the tires causing the issue specifically, meaning if you switched brands it would most likely not remedy the situation. I would try another shop with alignment and be sure to check all the weights etc during the process. Some guys have spent lots of money trying to diagnose with different wheels/tires/suspension setups and nothing has seemed to cure it.

They will also try to use the lug adapter instead of using the standard cone to balance the tires. Funny, if they had listened to me to begin with and used the adapter, may it would have worked out better. But cutting corners usually does not work.

If this does not work, I am going to try a more street oriented tire like Bridgestone Alenza Plus. I guess no off-roading for me :yield:

I buy all my tires from DT because they generally have great customer service (or at least my local shops do). Hopefully the replacement tires will solve the issue. Mine balanced perfectly and 5k later they are still very smooth and quiet. Also if you do decide to switch tires all together, look into the Cooper ATP (They are a DT only tire - ie less expensive). I had them for 60k and they were awesome - they also won't kill your off road dreams and look 10x more beefy than stock. If you hate those, well then there are a million options you should look at before those Bridgestones. As a tire nerd, I'd be happy to help.

Still waiting on the two Falken replacement tires to see if that will resolves the issue. Between the truck shaking at 62 and the "cupping" like noise at lower speeds, I am not holding on to a lot of hope but we'll see. I do agree DT has good customer service and they are at least willing to address the issue instead of just telling me tough! I looked at the Cooper ATPs but was not sure about the noise levels.

I did some of the easy Moab trails last year in stock dulers. My favorite was the Cathedral Valley trail in Capital Reef Nat'l park. Amazing scenery. A must for stock 4runner owners. I year later, I still have dirt coming out of the rear window after a wash. May be I'll post a pic.

I might take you up on your offer of help in finding a replacement if the Falken's do not work out. THANKS

For what it's worth, I've been running stock size AT3W on Trail rims for over 6K miles and no shakes. On the other hand, I have winter setup on TRD Pro rims and at around 70, if tires are "cold" it shakes like crazy.

You may need to find a better place to balance...

I have maybe 8,000 on my stock size and I can say I have zero shakes and zero issues with both a good amount of highway and lots of off roading and wheeling now. They did get louder around 5,000 miles but they are still quite compared to any other AT tire. They ride amazing. I'm sorry for the issue you're having but I'm confident it's a fluke and DT will take care of it.

Finally got around to getting these tires today. I did a lot of research and determined the AT3W's seemed like the best bang for the buck. I'm hoping tomorrow I can try them out on some dirt.

I run mine @ 35 psi for the stock size.
