New Falken AT tire (A/T3W)

I got a set of these last week on my old Taco. Yes, I know I'm on T4R but when my FN Overlanders hit for my 16' 4R next week, I want things as perfect as they can be first time around.

Here's my question- I noticed the red and yellow paint marks on the sidewalls, and even questioned the shop about the yellow mark not in line with the valve stem. They (DT) said with roadforce balancing, the marks don't apply to that type of balance. What say ye brothers?
Funny thing is, almost all the wheel weights just so happen to be almost in line with the yellow factory sidewall marks...

Given the apparently rampant balancing issues w/ the Falkens, what would be the best alternative in a 275/70/17? The characteristics most appealing w/ the Falkens are the reported off AND on road ride quality and the rain/snow performance. I need to make a decision on new shoes next week and, yes, I've been using the search function but doubt i'll have time to get through the 1000s of posts before Thursday. Any help is much appreciated!

Best bet is probably a BFG KO2 from what I've seen if you want something on the burlier side of AT that is severe snow rated.

Another interesting option is a Cooper ST Maxx... Not severe snow rated, but generally supposed to be decent. They're closer to a hybrid AT/MT.

Tire Rack is showing the new Firestone Destination XT as coming in 275/70R17 as a special order, but no sign of it on Firestone's website currently also. That could be an interesting tire in this size if they do start making it soon.

Nitto Terra Grappler G2

Hi all. Hope I’m not hijacking the thread with a different brand but as a newb can’t start a new thread yet. I’ve been looking at the 2020 SR5 Premium 4WD but with TRD Pro wheels and tires. I know Toyota uses the Nitto Terra Grappler on the Pro but not sure if it’s the G2. Since I’ll be buying new I plan on making this part of the deal but not sure if Toyota uses the Grappler or the Grappler G2 and if not can they put on the G2?

Also I’m not quite ready to pull the trigger as I’m trying to build up a little more equity in my current vehicle for the trade-in. At this point should I just wait for the 2021 model? From everything I read it seems doubtful they would release a 6th Gen for 2021 and I would think any improvements would be minimal after what they did with the 2020 model.

This is amusing since all this time I was thinking I had the G2 on my Pro and just woke up and realized it's the old tire design. I don't think you can even find the Grappler in 265/70R17 any longer from Nitto (it's not on their website for one thing). Probably goes back to the G2 just having come out around when Toyota introduced the TRD Pro. Amazing they have not swapped to a more modern tire.

Reminds me of how Jeep ran with the BFG KM on JK Rubicons up to right before the JL came out. The tire was ancient history by that point and I actually think the KM3 was out at the end of the run.

Honestly, if you can avoid Terra Grapplers (and the G2 from what I understand), do. They are mediocre tires to me at best. Mine are almost certainly coming off at around 10K miles before a Colorado trip involving some offroading later this summer. Scared I'll rip a sidewall out or puncture them otherwise.

Well, sh!t. I just ordered a G2 since TG’s aren’t available anymore as my 5th tire in the rotation. That will drive me insane if one is different in the rotation. I guess I assumed since the date code was 51st week of 2018, they were G2s

Thanks for the replies. From everything I read I didn't think the Pro had G2s. If you look at this page they only reference the NTG:

Looking at the Nitto web site it appears they have G2 tires that fit the 2020 TRD Pro. I may break down and call the salesperson at the Toyota dealership I bought my wife's Corolla from last year, just have to make him understand not to call/email me every week until I'm ready to buy.

I've never driven the G2 but all the reviews I've read say it's a big improvement over the old TG.

Same. Just got mine put on today after reading through this thread. I was very worried. I immediately drove 50 miles round trip on the freeway fluctuating my speed between 50 and 70. No steering wheel wobble. Nothing to complain about. I was curious how much weight they had to put in to balance them. A single 1/4 ounce, 3x 1/2 ounce, and a single 1 ounce. So far I am very impressed.

23,000 miles on 265/70R17 115T Falken Wildpeaks made in Thailand. I use the same PSI that is on the door frame sticker - 32psi.

No issues at all.

I bought mine from Discount Tire and had Discount Tire install them.

I also have a set of 265/75R16 on my Nissan Frontier.

I made an appointment for July 1st to get the AT3's off my truck and get a new set of BFG all terrains. They start a rebate in a few weeks and considering i'm probably going to lose 4-500 bucks selling these used I may as well wait it out a few weeks for a rebate. I've been in contact a few times with the amazon seller who keeps asking me for a picture of the problem.... And I'm now past both the 30 days and 1000 miles for the manufacturer's 30 day satisfaction guarantee so I'm hosed.

As you go up in load range for a given tire size, the tire is designed to handle more weight. So there is more material (rubber, steel, etc) used in making the tire to handle more weight. Since there is more material used in constructing the tire, they are heavier.
