New Falken AT tire (A/T3W)

"Been lurking around for some time and doing as much reading as I can, didn't quite read all 150+ pages, did read a nice chunk of it though. I picked up a 2019 4runner SR5 Premium mostly for fishing and camping. which turned into overlanding/offroading. After a ton of reading I decided to go with:

Dobinsons IMS Suspension Kit Toyota 4Runner 2010-21
* C59-300 - 1.75 - 2" lift in the front, haven't decided where i'll land yet
* C59-325 - 2" lift in the rear

JBA UCA's in standard for it's reliability and ease of replacement parts should i need them in a hurry.

I'm more of a weekend warrior than anything, the 4runner is my DD so I'm trying to balance ride quality, MPG, acceleration etc with capability. I live in Colorado, run trails once a month and fishing the rest of the time, so generally dirt roads and level 1 or 2's will get me to most fishing spots but i'm not shy about pushing the 4runner harder if it means better fishing / views (photography). What draws me to the AT3W's is it's such a great all around tire sans balancing issues. The most difficult trails I've ran so far are Tin Cup Pass (in 2019) and Imogene last year. I don't envision myself running any trails more difficult than either of those and i'm more a fair weather off-roader.

After reading this thread i'm still on the fence on the Falken AT3W WildPeaks due to balancing issues. My initial plan was to go with 275/70R17 but am considering the 285's which is why I picked up the UCA's, even if I don't go with 285 they'll still be of help. I'm planning on regearing to 4.56 in the future, not sure when (likely in the next couple of years).

To the best of my knowledge, if i go with 275's i can stay on the stock SR5 wheels, if i go up to 285, i believe I'll need spacers (1.25") or a new set of wheels with a -10mm offset?

I'm torn between the SL and C rated tires. I like the idea of a SL rated tire for MPG and comfort, just a bit worried about longevity. I believe mast4r said the C wouldn't provide more protection than an SL, it will however likely wear down faster than a C rated tire? Given my usage though, maybe it won't matter too much?

Considering the weight of the tires, if I do go for a C tire it'll be in 275's or SL if I go to a 285 i think. The last option i suppose is, i could always wait a bit longer, try to find a lighter wheel to help offset the weight of the tires a bit.

I'd be open to other options provided they perform as well as the AT3W's do. Deceiver mentioned the MT01's, after looking at the weight though i'm worried about breaking power on the heavier tires.

Thanks!"

Hi,

I'm in a very similar position as you. I just went to 275/70/17 C loads yesterday after I saw a puncture on the stock H/T yesterday (it couldn't be repaired because it was too close to the sidewall: this is also the second puncture I've had in about the 30k miles the vehicle has been driven since it came off the lot in early 2018). I'm running an Ironman 4x4 Foam Cell Pro Stage 3 suspension (went on in January) with about 2.5" and 2" of lift in the front and back, respectively (this includes UCAs that come with the kit). I don't know if I can feel the difference in unsprung weight quite just yet, but it does seem to ride nicer/smoother in the little bit of street driving I've done so far. My initial thought was to get FN wheels, but I'm going to keep them on the stock SR5 wheels for now. I'm trying to keep the rig as close to stock as possible while upgrading functionality (ditch lights, LFD crossbars instead of a roof rack, other lighting upgrades, etc.): the thought of having to modify the vehicle just so I can run rims I like seems a little backwards to me, especially if the stock rims will take the tires I wanted. Also, with the vast majority of my offroading being on forest roads and tracks out here in SoCal, I don't need tires/suspension that are more extreme.

Just got my new tires on in stock size, so far it's only been 20 miles, but noticeable difference in ride quality and noise, look a lot more aggressive than the stock tires too. Here are some before any after pics:

50+K on my stock size SL falkens and up until recently I was set on getting another set in another 5-10K miles. They've been excellent in the rain and snow, and haven't had too much trouble getting them balanced at DT (I do recall at least 2 trips back after rotation to get them rebalanced). However, they have gotten stupid loud over the last 10K or so miles. It's bad enough for me to be taking a hard look at the Toyo AT3s and other options, especially considering the falkens aren't as cheap as they were initially...

How do you like them in that size? I think that will be my next tire.

Absolutely love the skinnies. I can still pull 20mpg+ on the highway. I have had no issues with them off-road and they perform really well. I am debating bumping up to 35x10.50's since the skinnies have performed so well.

Well I made the switch from the At3w to Falken Wildpeak MT01s. The change had little to do with the performance of the AT since it handled everything I through at it, I just wanted a MT and larger tire. Though the improved performance in mud will be nice, that's the one downfall for the AT.

So you got the 295s with a 2.5inch lift on 17" wheels? What did you have to chop off to fit those there? I am about to get the 285s since I have a Eibach Pro lift which is 2.75 front/1 rear but if the 295s fit I might just get those.

I had to chop alot...but to be honest I can't remember specifically how much was chopped for that one change. I had chopped alot already, BMC for sure. I switched the bumper out the next year too so that took care of the last bit of rubbing.

I think I have decided on 275/70/17. I'm only going to level the front with a 1" Cornfed spacer. I already removed my front mudflap so it should fit fine. I just don't feel like trimming anything at the moment. I have less than 400 miles on my Nitttos. I wanted to sell them and at 400 miles they will sell better than if I wait a few months. The AT3's have performed very well for me on my Pro and my Outback. I like having a C load for the possible slightly better sidewall strength. Plus they just look more aggressive. After going through the entire thread it seems like the 275's are basically plug n play.

Is the extra 3/4" of tire worth an extra 10lbs per corner just to have a C on a basically stock 4Runner? 57lbs of tire vs 46ish.

Looks like AT3's only have an E load in 265 and I definitely don't want E load. The AT3's are so much better than the Nitto's so yes its worth the extra penalty in weight I think for capability and looks.

Got my 275/70/17 AT3’s installed. This is my 3rd vehicle that I have had them installed on and they are a fantastic tire IMO. Ordered a 1” Cornfed spacer which will level it out nicely.

Over 5 years with these tires and they’ve been great here in GA. This was on my wife’s 4Runner so all pavement driving. Handled great year around, including cold and wet weather and never had any traction problems. Was also nice and quiet on the highway and the wear was very even on all fours. Only issue was they did not last the full 55k miles. Ours were done by 49k and we got reimbursed for the remaining miles. Overall very satisfied with them. Still have them on my LX470 and they do well on the trails.

Switched out to Toyo Open Country AT3 this time around as those have a wear off 65k.
