New Falken AT tire (A/T3W)

Got the E Rated 285's installed on the Ray 10's. After reading the last couple of pages, I'd just like to add a few things. Someone mentioned that they couldn't find these tires on the Discount Tire Direct store with the "W", only the AT3. This tire is not made without the "W". It's the only way they come. When I ordered mine the listing didn't specifically say "W", only AT3. When they arrived they were in fact AT3W's. Also, the Discount Tire EBay store is free shipping. The other places I've seen online, if they were actually a few dollars cheaper, they charged $60-$100 for freight shipping. Lastly, if anyone wants to ask about how the E Rated 285's ride comapared to the P Rated (I've had both in this same tire and size), I can tell zero difference. This is coming from someone who has spent the last 10yrs driving lifted F250 diesel trucks. A lot of the minor little things that people on here complain about in ride quality go totally unnoticed by me. The 4Runner rides like a dream no matter the tires or PSI compared to a F250 with a 7" lift on 37" Toyo MT's.

This is with no lift? I'm guessing you had to do some fender work to avoid rubbing correct?

I have Icon Coilovers on the front with remotes and Icon 2" springs and shocks in the rear. I just didn't have them cranked up very much in that pic. It is higher now. I did the fender liner mod in the front and I cut a small window in the mud flap where it was rubbing. It's fine now, but I will be doing a body mount chop on the in the next week or so. It would still rub pretty bad off-road and I'm not dealing with that.

Did you already have some type of lift on your 4Runner or is this all stock? Can't really tell from my phone. I've got the same color, I love it. Going with black wheels though.
That's stock height. The 285s gave me an inch of lift tho.

I hate you. I'm waiting until I can find some Ray10s in gold/bronze, which will be never. Lol.

This makes me tempted to bump up to the 285s.

Seriously, do it. I thought long and hard on this. I KNEW that down the road i would regret not getting a bigger tire. So, i went ahead and did the front fender mod (which was very simple) to clear room. They did rub slightly on the mud flaps, but i trimmed about a 4-5" window out of them where the tires hit. Everything was done with a box cutter and heat gun. I encourage anyone on the fence about 285's to go ahead and make the jump.

Not too worried about mpg but I did notice a change with the 265s. How severe is the change with the 285s?

I'm down about 1 mpg, maybe a touch less. Which was expected, but it's not nearly as bad as the K02 lol.

Should've ran a Carli Pintop kit ;)

4runner looks fantastic. I did notice a slight difference when i went to E rated k02's....but it's probably just the butt dyno psyching me out.

are the Falkens lighter? I gotta say the 4runner feels insanely slow with the 285 k02's....doesnt bother wife tho so i guess thats all that matters.

I want to say i read somewhere that they are indeed lighter than K02's. Let me research that real quick.

EDIT: Falken's weigh 50.5 lbs and the BFG weigh 58.1 lbs. So, overall that's roughly a 32lb difference on all four tires.

If you go with the FN f(x) Pro wheels which are actually an inch wider than the stock wheels and much lighter combined with the Falken 285 tires, you only go up about 8 lbs on each corner over the stock setup. The FN wheels actually fit the 285's better as well and were designed for the 4Runner, FJ and Tacoma.

Buddy just got them for his taco and loves them.

I'm going to call up DTD and buy a set of 265/70/17 to go with some TRD wheels.

Was debating on KO2s, but at the price and the great reviews, I think this is a no brainer.

Too bad I missed out on the $75 rebate that DTD had earlier this week :(

Installed P285/70R17 with FN Fx Pro on a SR5 stock suspension. Did the fender liner mod, removed front flaps and trimmed a small piece of the bumper. At full lock on drivers side, barely tips the body mount. So far no noticeable rub on street and freeway driving. Tested a number of angles without issues. Tires seem to be the same volume as stock to my ears. Cant wait to get the suspension upgraded next.

I really appreciate responding. Do you have pictures? Do you feel if you had any type of lift you would have had to do any of these mods? I'm very handy and have no problems doing these mods but I'd like to avoid it. I have the Bilstein all around set at 1.75 in the front and 1" cornfeds spacers in the rear. I just got the FN wheels this afternoon. I'll let you know how things go on Tuesday once I put everything on. You might want to go with my set up, real affordable and wasn't hard to install even with KDSS.

From all I've read on 285s, you will need to do fender liner mod(15 mins) + trim the bottom corner bumper(15 mins w/ dremel, sand block, wet sand) + reshape or remove the front mud flaps(5 mins). All of these can be done with wheels left on. Turn the wheel for access when needed. At first, I only moved the fender liner forward and removed the front flaps(my preference) that way I could see how much rub actually exist(see pic for full lock). Pretty minimal but have to factor in compression when offroad.

Hopefully this was an isolated incident for me so no one else runs into it. Here is the defective tire bead P285/70R17 from Discount tire direct. Will order directly from Americas Tire store next time since they do price match DTD.

Thanks for the pics!! Looking good! Once you get a lift, you should be in really good shape. So at full lock, no rub on the body mount. I've seen several threads where folks were doing body chops mount chops. That I'd really not want to get into! I think it's only when you go with tires larger than 33".

Did you notice that tire issue prior to mounted or once it was mounted?
