New foam inserts for upper seat backs?

I recently replaced both lowers, and the company said they don't make the upper. I wonder why? The bottoms now look fantastic with the new leathers in place, but you can really tell the uppers are just a bit slouchy.

How about it aftermarket companies, get us some new foam uppers!

Anyone know a source I'm overlooking?

I seen posts of new seat covers. However, I would imagine out there we should be able to find replacement foam as that wears out just like the covers. I hoping a few users respond to your need as I would think carving your own could be an option but surely there is a close match out there somewhere for the seat cushion materials. :)

I think you can order seat replacements from the dealer (or online), but it's really pricey.

My plan is to get to a junk yard to find a seat in good shape and grab the inserts from that seat. Should be about $100 and I'll have both foam inserts if I need them. Not ideal, but way cheaper than from dealer.

Here's something I've always been curious about too... What is the difference between the sport seat and regular cloth seat because they don't have any foam listed for the sport seat? I think I have a cloth sport seat... Is there such a thing and does it then use the foam for the leather seat?
Here's what the dealer shows: "Seat Back Pad 71551-35040 Seat Back Pad, Left Cloth seats, without sport seat. Discontinued"

Exactly. The foam below breaks down pretty badly even though it's protected by the covers. I just replaced all my front leather and the company sold me two brand new bottom foams which are very high quality and fantastic to sit on. When I got in the truck my head almost touched the headliner like it did back when I first bought it! :cowboy:

For some reason, this company doesn't offer the uppers and I'm pretty sure they are NLA from Toyota.

As far as the cloth seats, I'd be a little surprised if the frame/foam wasn't identical to the leather versions.

What company did you use?
 
Found them on ebay, but did the deal through their website to customize my package. Had it narrowed down to 2 companies but went with US Auto Seat Cover. My interior is Oak leather, and these covers are absolutely spot on to the rest of my interior.

This was my first time to mess with any kind of upholstery and it really was pretty easy. I added heated seat inserts or it would have been even easier. Just need a cheap hog ring kit off amazon and then it's strip off the old on slide on the new.

The bottoms fit perfectly and the tops are just ever so slightly bunchy. I really suspect that is due this very issue of putting new leather over old worn out seat uppers :wacko:.

Left and right seat foams are the same... find a junkyard passenger seat and swap the foam over. The foam breaks down from use as much as age.

'99+ passenger seat bottoms have a weight sensor, but otherwise swap left to right too.

I did both lowers and the 1st set of hog rings I got were too big, they were the type for doing fences( was hard to tell online) so make sure you get the ones for upholstery. The rings have a size number I think but I forgot it.

I did my seats re-using the original hog rings and with a couple needle nose pliers.

Good thread. Thanks for everyone's comments and ideas.

My driver's seat foam is looking rather long in the tooth so this thread has given me some good ideas.

Looks great Charlie.. Several of mine are in need of some TLC but they can wait for a bit. Thanks for the tips though on this thread. Will help me decide which way to go when I do these projects.

This is the way to go, just did it on my 2000. Find a nice passenger seat and replace the typically hammered driver seat foam. In some cases the covers are interchangeable too.

Great idea, simple solution.

I carefully peeled the weight sensor off my old cushion and used rubber contact cement to apply it to the new foam. Works perfectly.
