sup guys. lurked around here for years lusting after a runner. i have always been a subaru guy but have wanted a yota forever.

anyway i picked up this haggard beater from a sketch used car dealership for 1200 bucks last night.

1988 4runner
5 speed
22re
some kind of aftermarket bumper
280k
looks like it was rolled over to me at some point. the roof is passenger side is all banged up.

current issues...

starts and runs fine but as soon as you start driving the cel comes on and engine loses power but still runs fine. brake pedal goes to the floor. if you pump it a few times you can stop haha

meh whatever. here are some pics.

haha i doubt this will get a sas. just need to get it drivable at this point. then take the top off and go camping!

so anyway i checked the code it was giving me. 51. removed the tps and sure enough it is sticking and not returning all the way like it should. is there anyway i can just clean the inside of it so i moves freely again? after a quick search these little ****ers are expensive!

Welcome to the forum!

Doubt it was rolled.. MAYBE flopped, but it looks more like something was just dropped on it.

Nice work on getting the CEL code.. Not sure if you can clean them.. Possibly get a used one from a junk yard? Yeah, they are expensive!

thanks! ya its pretty banged up around the windshield to. has some ghetto sealant around it. who knows. it was cheap enough that i dont care haha.

looks like rockauto has a generic tps for 60 shipped. might order a master cylinder from them as well. seems like that is most likely my problem. unless the brakes just need to be bled.

you replace the TPS with a new or used one? you can clean the old TPS. they make a cleaner thats safe to use on them.....

Welcome! Everyone in Portland is into Subarus. haha I have no room to talk considering I used to own one and am involved in the local rally scene. :fish:
Be sure to check out the Portland thread in the 3rd gen section, that's where you'll meet the local guys. :thumb:

alright... so wrenched on the 4runner all day.

swapped out the MC and finally have a bit of pedal feel back. definitely needs another bleed for sure. here is some of the old brake fluid in a jim beam bottle

decided to go at the code 52 i was getting that makes it run like shit.

tested the knock sensor wire at the ecu and plug with the multimeter. nothing. ok so there must be a break in the line somewhere right? start poking around and i find this

someone along the line cut it? what the ****. ok so we fixed that. plug everything back in and drive it around the block. throws a code 52 again..

at this point i am thinking it might be the ecu. a ton of crap and dirt by it. i figure this thing was rolled over in some mud at some point...

opened her up and it looks pretty nasty in there. but no idea of that would be enough to cause a single code to trip...??

anyway i am done for the day. also took the top off just for fun.

wait so what you are saying is that your break fluid shouldn't be black?

Great looking rig. Welcome to the t4r family. 1st gen FTW. You will never want to drive another car again!!!

Wish your truck was closer in years to mine. I have an ECU in perfect condition.

:hello:

I don't know about you all, but I really hate chasing down electrical problems! ARGH! If a P.O. hacked up the wiring you can be sure it's foo'd somewhere else.

Good luck, and nice looking rig ya gots there!

:hungry:

just be glad it is a few wiring issues i have had to chase wiring issues to pretty much every major sensor maf, the 4wd will stay broken for a wile, the o2 sensor, the tps was fine amazingly, the knock sensor wiring... uugh i will never complain that electrical tape is not sticky enough ever again

if i search ebay for 1988 4runner knock sensor i get a ton of results for under 20 bucks. but those are for the v6. cheapest one i can find for the 22re is 140...

can i get away with swapping in a cheaper one?
