New Head Unit Questions

Good to know. Is it worthless for nav on 4Runners that had nav originally? Or is the headunit “paired” to the brain?

As far as I know, the radio should work without it, but any GPS functions will not work. From 2005 on, Toyota "moved the brain" into the headunit, thus the "brain box" disappearing.

I had an older JVC CD\DVD head unit in the 4Runner when I bought mine last year in Feb. It had the same steering controller. I was able to utilize it as well when I installed my new Pioneer AVH-2550NEX head unit.

Have you tried to program it? If not you'll need to. They have videos on the Metra website showing how. Mine was kind of a PITA but I eventually got the programming sequence correct.

When I previously tried installing the unit, the box would light up red for a second turn off. I vaguely remember seeing a vid saying it will blink green when programming/programmed?

Mine was the same way. There were a few different ways to do it. The one where it auto recognises it and sets it up itself was supposed o be the easiest. Mine I had to do it manually by selecting which brand HU and follow that method. Sounds like just a programming issue if you have it wired correctly.

Crutchfield is your friend my man. They have great customer service and if you are unhappy with the unit, you can return it. They also sell you all the kits to get proper fitment and keep all your steering controls working. Their customer service can also assist in selecting a good backup camera to work with the unit your purchasing.

I am currently in process of returning a unit I ended up not liking and Crutchfield was very understanding of my special circumstance in missing the 60 day deadline and approved the return.

Got it, just looked up how to hopefully program it. Appreciate the lead!

This is also good to know. I purchased everything through them so I guess worst turns to worst I can return/exchange it.

Sorry for the lack of replies. My notifications were not coming through. For the wired Android auto and Apple car play where have you mounted your phones? I don't want to block my ac vents and the low mounts look like they block the cup holder access.

Thanks for the great info and install tips.

For me the beauty of apple car play/ android auto is that you can plug your phone in and then not have to touch it again while driving. I ran a usb extension from the back of the headunit under my cupholders to a usb port in one of the empty switch ports on the center console. I just plug it in there and set my phone on the dash or in the center console because now I can use maps, calls, etc, from the headunit itself.

Wanted to say thanks again :thumb: I was able to get it installed and all steering wheel controls work after manually programming it.

Awesome! Glad to hear it. I know your frustration. I had installed my new HU and after trying to program for what felt like hours, I took a break and went inside. Came out and tried programming manually 1 more time and worked. Such a relief lol.

Pioneer avh-p3300bt

I am facing this unique problem. I installed Pioneer AVH-3300BT HU in my 2004 limited with JBL. After installing I found that sound gets low or sometimes comes from rear speakers only and then from front speakers and randomly switches between speakers.
After a while I installed my factory HU just to check and it works fine.
So the problem is with the Pioneer HU? How can I verify that?

TIA
