New Head Unit Questions

I have finally decided I'm going to update my head unit and wanted some feedback before I jump in. I have a 2007 with the JBL system and planned to go with the Pioneer DMH-2660NEX. I was set on a straight android unit but decided against it for quality reasons. I've seen where a few of you have this head unit so are you happy with it so far? I wish the manufacturers would get on the ball with the HD screens so we could also have better cameras.

From reading posts I think I know the majority of the parts I need for the install. Which dash kit have you found to be the best and did you buy the antenna adaptors seperate? If you installed a camera did you find one in particular that works hood or one that just sucks and to stay away from?

If you did it again would you go with a different head unit? I would like wireless android auto but don't know i want to pay $200 to $300 for it.

That’s a good headunit. It was on my short list but went with Sony myself. Just login to Crutchfield to see exactly what parts you need for the install. YouTube Provo Beast Audio has good videos for installing the headunit, camera, and more

I second the info about crutch field. You may find it marginally cheaper elsewhere, but the customer service at crutchfield is second to none. Pop your vehicle info in on their website and it’ll tell you exactly what you need. If you still have some questions, give them a call and someone can walk you through it step by step.

I’m going to also echo the crutchfield comment. I ordered a Pioneer unit from them and had them do the wiring harness and bought the unit that allowed me to keep the steering wheel controls functional. Made my install quick and easy

Yes Crutchfield is hard to beat. They don't have the head unit in stock but do have all the other parts. The metra dash kit has some pretty bad reviews. Wonder how much of that is really user error.

Yes the metra dash kit is junk in my opinion. Had to do lot's of customization to get it to work with my Kenwood Excelon DMX906S
 
I used Crutchfield as well and recommend them.

I went with the Kenwood Excelon DMX906S, PAC RP4.2-TY11 Wiring Interface, Metra 95-8210 Dash Kit (which is junk!) and the Crutchfield ReadyHarness™ Service.

The unit is nice and I like the wireless Android Auto, which has been solid with a Pixel 2 XL.

However, after diagnosis from a local shop, there is a high pitch whine that increases with engine speed. Comes from the tweeters in the doors. They say it's due to the PAC RP4.2-TY11 Wiring Interface and since it's not connected via RCA connections they can't add a Ground Loop Noise Isolator inline.

They are currently looking into a replacement for the PAC RP4.2-TY11 Wiring Interface which would use RCA connections.
 
We just installed the DMH-2660NEX with the Metra 95-8202 Dash kit (non-JBL), iDatalink Maestro, with required harnesses, with their Crutchfield wiring service.

All the above was plug and play. (just watch a video). No issues whatsoever, no mods required.

I used a Camera Source rear camera for the OEM look. This install took a bit longer to install than the head unit.

I suggest running the wire starting from the hatch. Use silicone spray to snake thru the rubber hatch conduit. Use a heat gun to soften rubber sealer / trim pieces etc, for removal.

I also used the metro 95-8202 mounting kit and I’ve had zero problems.

I can’t tell you what to go with but would help you offset costs by purchasing your old one. I have exact same year and trim. My disc drive seized in mine.

I have an 05 limited w/ JBL. I just installed the Sony XAV-AX3000 and i love the headunit. Looks great and the apple car play is a gamechanger.

I also used the metra dash kit and can confirm it’s total junk. I had to cut a significant piece of either side for it to fit into the dash trim, going to definitely replace it with something better soon.

The main issue i’m having is with the interface best buy decided to give me... a PAC RP4.2. There is no harness for the factory amp like best buy said there would be. I found also that a harness for the factory amp doesn’t exist, so i wouldn’t be able to integrate with the factory amp anyway. I lost the front center and subwoofer but everything else works, except it’s powered only from the headunit not the factory amp. Super bummed about this, and am probably just going to upgrade all the speakers and add an amp some time in the future.

TLDR : Sony AX3000 is good. Metra dash kit sucks. PAC RP4.2 will cause you to lose factory amp, front center, subwoofer.

We’re you able to retain the factory AUX?

I installed the same head unit and kit from crutchfield but for the life of me I could not get the factory aux port to work. Went through it all with their advisors, who thought it might be a harness issue. I decided just to run a separate aux cable to the glove box instead of ripping it apart and testing a new harness. Although I don’t use aux that bothered me a bit..

Sorry for the lack of replies. My notifications were not coming through. For the wired Android auto and Apple car play where have you mounted your phones? I don't want to block my ac vents and the low mounts look like they block the cup holder access.

Has anyone tried to install a JVC headunit using the Metra 70-8114 Steering Wheel Controls Harness and the Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter?

This is what Crutchfield provided in my order and I cannot get the steering wheel controls to work.

I had an older JVC CD\DVD head unit in the 4Runner when I bought mine last year in Feb. It had the same steering controller. I was able to utilize it as well when I installed my new Pioneer AVH-2550NEX head unit.

Have you tried to program it? If not you'll need to. They have videos on the Metra website showing how. Mine was kind of a PITA but I eventually got the programming sequence correct.
 
Anybody have any idea what the bolt/screw spacing on the factory backup camera for fourth gens is? My factory backup camera works, but the quality is pretty rough- has probably degraded a bit in its 15 years of life. I don't mind to run wiring all the way to the head unit as I'll be replacing the factory unit with a Sony at the same time. Any suggestions for something that will fit well in the factory camera location! Thanks!

If going with a newer HU, ditch the factory camera, it's low res. Because you have the factory camera, there are already holes in the tailgate to fish the wires through. I'm not entirely sure you can reuse those wires, but the camera will be have to be ditched.

I've used this camera with success (link). It it about the size of the factory camera. You MIGHT have to drill a hole in the rear tail gate trim to properly secure it though. I'm sure you can use some sort of bracket to secure it too if you don't want to drill a hole for it. Good luck
