new issue

05 4runner
installed a new short block about 12k miles ago, heads were sent out and rebuilt, every single thing was replaced in this bad boy, sensors, seals, etc.
only issue i've had was i put one of the tensioners in the wrong spot and ate my belt up, ended up taking out the front crank seal and overheated. fixed everything and even took it to Tennessee ran like a champ.

Well today while heading out to the trails 6x12 with (3) 4 wheelers. i noticed upon me stopping at a light my oil pressure light flashed. which is a definite WTF considering the mileage i have. my CEL bulb is out. so when i got home popped on the scantool and it came back with a code p606, which from reading could be a bad ecm. but not finding any specific fix or someone resolving the issue.

what has me more concerned is the oil pressure light???
she's ran fine this whole time, no idle issues at all. only now that i'm getting the oil light, the rpm's drop and rise for a second.

I've also dealt with a broken belt that ate my oil seal, not a fun thing to deal with. I have a thread here on it.

As for the oil light, I also have a thread on my saga which was caused by oil sludging from what I assume was a neglectful former owner. I suggest you T the sensor and install an oil pressure gauge to make sure it's not a real oil pressure issue. Mine was real and it's scary how low the pressure can get before that light goes on. My gauge was basically zero before the light would flicker. If you do have low oil pressure, pull the small oil pan off and check the oil pickup. Mine was nasty with hardly any oil getting through. I now pull it when I see the oil pressure start to look odd and there's always been more junk in it. Pretty simple to check at least. Maybe you have belt debris clogging it seeing your block is new.

Gonna start with pulling the pan and the side filters on the engine block see if anything is in there. Block was new, heads were cleaned by shop, so should have been pretty clean in there.

If everything is clean, only thing I can think of is the oil pump already going bad. Bought one of the ones off rockauto new.

Seems to only do it when the engine has been worked some, cause I took it to the store and watched it and rpm’s go directly to where they need to.

Oil pressure gauge came back
15@idle
63@3k rpm’s

What has me concerned is the rpm drop when it did flash at a stop light while I was towing.

I remember the tensioner acting funny on install and it was brand new. Only thing I can think of that could cause the oil pressure light. If it’s malfunctioning wouldn’t I have signs of it, like a crappy idle??

Timing belt tensioner? So this is a V8?

I would be figuring out if the light flickering is a real pressure issue or just a flaky sensor. The only way I know to do that is monitor it with a real gauge.

My bad timing chain. Pressure gauge showed good numbers but the light flickered under heavy load. I’m assuming the pump is malfunctioning as it did make the rpm’s drop during the flicker, that’s more of what my concern is.

Update: got around to taking the oil pan off and what you know the oil pan strainer had hard bits of plastic inside, probably enough to make the flow of oil come out sloppy, i'm assuming from when the belt wrapped around the pulley. cleaned out the strainer, need to get a new gasket for the oil pan. do you guys use pifg or just the gasket?? i used both last time and had leak through that i noticed taking it off.
