New Lift Troubles

Hey dudes, so I pieced together a lift and took it into a shop to have them put it together. I went with the 4 Bilstein 5100 shocks, with LC 8 wraps in the rear and Toytech Eibach in the front. Very similar to Richashay's 2nd option in this thread, as many of you are probably familiar with. The only difference being the eibach instead of the tundra coils.

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/101758-**rickashays-ome-vs-trd-tundra-lc-review**.html

I also got an extended brake line, differential, and panhard drop.

I got a call today after a couple hours in the shop, and he says that they had a real hard time getting the LC coils on, and when they did, he said the rake was ridiculous. Like minimum of 2.5 inches! He then went on to say "Those 4runner backyard mechanics don't really know much about suspension, you should't have listened to whoever told you that." I find that hard to believe seeing as how so many of you have successfully ran this lift.

So where did I go wrong? This guy runs a successful lift business I find it hard to believe that he's an idiot when it comes to this stuff. So it's gotta be something I've overlooked? I'm fairly novice, no shame, but I feel like I did my research... Anyways if I missed something stupidly simple, let me know. Only thing I could think of is something to do with the rear bumpstops?

Don't have a picture, but only the front lift is in. It's a lot lower than I was expecting too.. Thoughts are appreciated.

Hmmm, well this backyard 4Runner mechanic had pretty much the same setup. What perch on the 5100s did you have them put the Eibachs on? Mine were on the 2nd and I had about an inch of rake.

I literally just got done installing my Tundra / TRD up front (3rd perch on Bilstein 5100's) and LC 8-wraps with the Bilstein 5100's in the rear. It is high as hell in the back, but I was half expecting that.. Here's a picture to give you an idea.

I mean, it is a ton of rake, BUT I'm going to load down the back and hopefully it will even out / the LC coils will sag over time. Or I'll just get bigger tires ;)

Ok, good so if you had the same setup then it's not an issue with the parts I purchased. How much lift did you have in the front, and rear? I said something about putting it on the second perch, but I'm not sure if he in fact did. Will I be able to see what perch it's on if I went out with a flashlight right now?

Ok thanks for the pic, that gives me a good reference. I decided to go with the Eibachs because they were supposedly going to give a little more lift in the front so the rake wouldn't be as bad..

The mechanics words were "It's a ridiculous amount of rake and if you ever plan on taking it off-road it will be crap."

Side note this guy has been a dbag to work with, I tried offering to show him the thread in which I got my idea from, and his answer was that he didn't have time. Won't be doing business with him again.. If only he didn't already have my money.

I have 3" front lift and 7 wraps. I have about 1" rake. You should have done 7 wraps. Also if you got adjustable coilovers you can lift it up front a little. And I'm sure he left cone bump stop installed. Take these out and lose 3/4" lift.

Okay, good to know. What would be the adverse effect in removing the bump stop?

+1 I have exact same lift. Put it in myself, never attempted something like that before and it was a PITA. Not sure why a "professional" mechanic would have trouble though. My rake was the same too, ended up perching up to #2 also prob sitting close to an inch after settle. In def got more rear lift from the 8 wraps than I saw others post when researching it. Don't mind the rake now, actually kind of like it.

Have you had a chance to look at your truck yet? It's hard to see the notches where the c-clip is with the spring cup over them. But Eibachs on Tundra 5100s on the 1st perch should net around 3 inches of left, the 8 wraps around 4.5"...on the second perch you're talking 3.5", (which I don't recommended.) Also, are the LC springs new or used? They will settle a bit. What size tire are you running? I'm guessing the stock 265s. If you move up to 285s, it wont look as awkward. Mine looked kinda funny too when it was just sitting on 265s for the 1st day. If you haven't seen the truck yet, and the guys who did it actually installed everything correctly, there is no way there is 2.5" of rake. They are probably just exaggerating.

Yeah I got down there today and they had taken out the LC coils per my request after showing me a picture. The rake was pretty rough. The coils are used, about 150k miles on em if I remember correctly. He didn't recommend going to the 2nd perch on the fronts either, because of the stress it would be putting on the control arms. So in the end, I have just decided to trade my 8 wraps for 7 wraps, like JayRolla suggested. Not sure why I was netting so much more rake than what I've seen, but I mean it is what it is.

Just kind of weird that there was really that much rake. Like I said, I had the SAME exact setup, and it wasn't that bad. I'm swapping my 8 wraps for 861s down the road sometime soon, because with my tent and all my gear loaded, the rear rides lower than the front now I think.

Where you running stock cone bump stops? Also to the OP if you drove it around some im sure it woudl have settled a bit. I think you will be happy with 7 wraps though. They are the perfect amount of lift, less chance of shock over compression, or springs falling out from over stretching. To me its the best coil to run on these vehicles.

I am.

It's very possible he didn't have them seated right, but he's a fairly reputable mechanic. He may have just never worked with these components before! That combined with the bumpstops on there. I talked to him about removing the bumpstops and he had no idea what I was talking about haha...

For reference, it was a bit higher in the back and a bit shorter in the front than the picture Yoko posted in this thread. Was just way too much for me. Thanks for the input everyone :) Just to find myself some 7 wraps now.

I'm running 861s with the cones in. they were a pain to get in since I didn't have a good point to jack from, but I feel like the guy is over exaggerating the rake with your 8 wraps
