Hello all, I'm Rold. Let me start by saying that I've never really put a wrench to any Yoda other than a 22RE so this is new ground for me. But I wrench on everything from mowers to forklifts so I know my way around a toolbox.

I'm helping my neighbor with his 93 V6 runner. He decided to replace the timing belt but screwed it up somewhere along the line and once back together it ran like shit. Tried timing it......nope. Replaced some vac lines....nope. So I asked him about the replacement of the belt. His story sounded OK until he said that the timing marks never really lined up. Not even on the old belt but assures me that he followed the manual. So I had him take it all back apart today before I get into it. The cam gears will not line up with the marks on the rear plate as the manual says they should no matter how many times the engine is rotated. He then tells me that one of the gears moved when he did it the first time and just moved it back to where he thought it was supposed to be and proceeded to button things up.
NOW-
How can I help this guy get his truck running right again? The manual doesn't really tell ya how to set up the heads and block from scratch and I don't want to just start trying things.
My plan of action is to turn the crank to TDC on comp stroke and see which cam gear lines up with the mark and adjust the other gear to the other timing mark but don't want to waste the motor.

HELP PLEASE

You're not going to hurt the engine, it's a non interference engine.

Put the crank at tdc, remove the timing belt from the cam gears. Line up both cams with the mark on the rear plate and reinstall the belt. Make sure that any slack in the belt is on the pass side of the engine.

Once done, turn the crank 3 full turns and verify the timing marks line up.
