i have a 92 4runner and i was thinking about getting a new motor for my 4runner because it gets bad milage (10mpg) and i was wondering if i should my current motor has 200k on it and i heard that i can get a motor from japan for cheap because of some emmisions law over there where you can only have like 60k on you motor or somethin like that? if i did would i be able to get a bigger motor i have the 3.0 v6 now what would you recomend?
New motor? yes/no/whatkind/howmuch

I would suggest that you first find out why your truck gets such poor mileage before you go replacing your engine.
Do a google search for "japanese engines" and you will find what you are looking for on the used Japanese engines. I don't know how cheap they are though.
There are other options: 1) try a salvage yard. They get lots of vehicles in every day that are totaled but still have good parts. It shouldn't be too hard to find an engine that way. 2) Consider a rebuild. 3) Consider a crate engine. These last two will run anywhere from $2000 to $3000 whereas an engine from a salvage yard can be had for $500 - $700.

I think you'll find most folks with that 3L engine coupled to an automatic trans get 12-14 --- 16 MPG at best. Add 200k (worn rings, valves, injectors) plus pehaps oversize agressive tread tires and you're looking at 10-12 MPG. If larger than stock (225/75x15 or the 31") are on it then the speedo/odo aren't even reading accurately - you could check with a GPS unit. The later Yota engines - 3.4 or 4L aren't an easy swap. Some folks have done a GM3.8 or 4.3L swap for about the cost of a rebuilt 3L -- if you can do the majority of the work yourself. A lot of the inefficiency is in the AT used up til 96 or so too (not just the engine).
A rebuilt engine, new headers w/slightly larger diameter exhaust, calibrated fuel injectors, stock road tires, and better air intake could help and not break the bank. Oh, and dump all the extra accumulated weight in the back and press easy on the gas pedal!
