New oil leak...

Thanks for the reply. I tightened those two bolts in that area and cleaned them. Did the same for the oil pan. I started the engine up and also was periodically checking the area to see if new oil is building up on those bolt heads but nothing thus far. Going to do some driving today and inspect it again after. I'm really hoping tightening is all it needed other wise you are right I will need plenty of luck lol.

There's a guide for this repair seems like only tightening 2 of the 17 bolts holding the upper oil pan most likely won't fix this. Lol

So was your problem the lower pan then?

I am seeing oil around the lower pan, been seeing it for about a month but must not be leaking much because I checked the oil level and it is still in the "full" range on the dipstick.

I sold the 4Runner a year ago. One thing I learned from the whole oil leak experience was that you have to use a gasket for the lower oil pan not gasket sealant.

Hi, just joined the forum to ask if anyone has had any luck stopping this leak by tightening the 2 bolts under that little black plastic cover? I have this exact same leak 07 v6 with 140k miles and it's very hard to tell if it's from that location or the oil pan gasket or something else. Thanks in advance!

I know this is an old thread, and I am getting old but my memory isn't too bad yet I hope.

The top "dot" or mark on the dipstick indicates Full. The bottom "dot" indicates Low (approx. 1 qt).

Adding a qt when it is just below the top mark will overfill the system by about 1 qt and can cause over pressure that can affect seals.

Now that may not have been the cause of his problem, but I am surprised that this wasn't mentioned over the life of this thread.

Sorry about the picture orientation. Looks like this is the right thread based on my suspected leak issue. I'm pretty sure if I pull the black plastic cover I'll find the passenger side bolt is leaking. I'm at 8K miles on my 2016. This has to be a record premature leak:rain::rain:

I'm sure the dealer will tell me it's normal and not to worry about it. I'll monitor and post another follow-up in a few months.

I too have the same leak. I got under there today and tried to spot where it was coming from. I removed the plastic cover and felt air being blown out (like oil vapor from a crankcase vent) and air being sucked in on the other side as can be seen in the pic above. One side of the plastic cover is wet and the other is not. Does anyone know if there is a PCV vent there or something?

You replace it yourself? If so, how was it? Anything difficult other than pulling the transmission, driveshaft, flexplate and starter? If you had someone do it, you mind me asking how much or how many hours did they get you for? Just trying to budget for mine.
 
Hello Folks: I have a 2004 V6, had been running great bought it new in 2003. Its about 200K now (199,545K ). I found some oil leak took it to dealer and below is what he said

1. Oil Pan Gasket Leaking
2. Rear Main oil Seal Leaking
3. Rear Brakes almost there
4. Steering column needs to be replaced ( since I had a mild shake whne I hit 60-65mph)
5. Tires need to replaced

Total quote is ~$5500. The value of the car is about the same or less. My question is should I fix it or get another car for a trade in. This has been my car for 14 years never let me down... just wanted your thoughts. Is it worth the fix .. any thoughts..?
