new owner of 86...rebuild/maintenance/tech info

pickin up an 86 today or tomorrow....just to be prepared for the worst...
how much does an engine rebuild normally run.....and anyone know a good place in los angeles?
also...it's got 200k....and should be up for timing chain soon....should i do it?...or just wait till the engine craps out....and do a rebuild(considering that all that stuff will be replaced with the rebuild)...
like i said...200 k....new radiator...new water pump...no visible leaks.....but when started the motor up..while warming up....smoke was whitish grey....not sure it was condensation or....you know.....said smog check was done last month....and compression tests came back fine....what els....thats pretty much it....i'm in love with the car....and i tend to get pretty fanatical about my cars....so i'm lookin to learn as much as possible.....ie history, tech info, mods, etc....so, any info on that'd be cool to...
and any tips.....THANKS!!!!

If the engine is running satisfactorily, just run it.

If the TC needs replacing it's a pretty easy DIY if you have a little wrenching experience. You don't even need to pull the head, as most sources say you do. To check the TC, pull the valve cover and pull on the TC, if there's more than a little slack, it needs replacing.

As for the whitish smoke, have you checked the coolant level, or the oil? If the coolant is frequently low or the oil looks like a milkshake, could be a HG.

price on rebuild depends if you do it or have it done $1200 to have it done $500 or less if you do it yourself, i just last week rebuilt my 86 22re so if you have any ? email me [email protected] btw if you don't remove head when doing timing chain it is possible to break headgasket

total cost, 70$ for timing set, 90$ for complete engine gasket set, 55$ to have head shaved and 1 valve fixed, had to rebuy head gasket 18$, rebuy timing gaskets $9, rtv silicone $3, 20$ for more then enough parts cleaner, 12$ for 5 qts oil, $4 for oil filter, 9$ for coolant, $15 for fuel filter........305$ give or take $20 for something i may have missed..........Helped by having another 22re donated so i could use the lesser of 2 evils for the project....btw have many spare 22re parts for sale if anyone needs anything

How did you get 35s under there? does it Rub? it doesnt looks like a lift... unless im really as dumb as I look. I have 31s on mine now... its stock

check the sig man......8in shackle extensions in the rear and cranked the torsion bars in the front, no rubbing at all.....btw i don't recommend the torsion bar crank, mines only temporary to make room for the 35's until axle swap in the next couple of weeks

Holy Crap! Is that a Fram Extra Gaurd oil filter on your toyota? What did your truck ever do to you?
Just kidding. Although, I would never trust my engine or timing chain to any filter other that an OEM. At $6.50, it is extremely worth it.
