Why Best Buy? There prices are not good at all.

call me old school but i like to buy something and have it then. I buy a lot of stuff online too but i wanted the speakers that day so i could install them before going out of town that afternoon and didn't want to wait for ship time.

there just something about walking into a physical store, speaking with other people, and exchanging cash for a immediate product. Kind of weird, i know, but that's something the internet will never replace no matter how low their pricing is.

I can understand that. For me, a high school about to be college kid, money is important so I go for as cheap as possible.

I have found the people at Best Buy and Circuit City to be very unknowledgeable about car audio.

This is from a member on yotatech:

3rd Generation factory front woofers are 6.75" when measured all the way across the mounts, and the brackets must be slightly modified to fit a 6.5 correctly (without stress on the mounting ring and the screws in straight). I know this is true from actual measurements from a '96, a '98, a 2000 and a 2002. I have seen them listed from several reliable sources as 7" and I have stated that several times in other post. Tonight I actually measured the removed speakers I have in my garage and it was dead on 6.75".

As far as the rear goes it is a little confusing. The factory rears should probably be considered 4" as that is the speaker size, but the large mounting ring and cardboard baffel make the speaker "assembly" more like a 5.25 inch. I have a 4" set of Alpines in my Jeep and the speaker cone is the same size as the 4runner cone but the mounts vary by about an inch. You cannot just swap them for a 5.25" using a factory bracket for sure in the '98 and 2000 that I have worked on, but they can be modified to take a 5.25" or a 6.5". If anyone wants more info on this I have pictures and some recommendations, but I know we are trying to keep this neat.

I have 6.5" and 5.25" Kicker KS series (component front and rear) going in in the next month or so when I get around to it.

Im just gonna stay out of this one. But theres not such thing as 6.75" speakers. Speakers come in 7" 6.5" 5.25" 4" 3.5" 2" then you have the off sizes 6/9" 6/8" 5/7" 4/10" and some other unusual ones. I was an installer for 5 years and I still do it freelance.

Hey Matt, by your words and pics, I assume you've done the mod to after-market 6.5" rear speakers that you speak of (cutting out the center of the mounting plate).

Do you have any problems with the rear windows hitting the speakers when rolled down? Have you checked for this?

One of the things that has held me back changing out the speakers was that I've read spacers were needed to keep the speaker magnet from interfering with the window. If those are NOT needed, I might get new speakers sooner. TIA.

It depends on the speaker. My fronts are Infinity Kappa Perfect Customs (only sold to installers and dealers) and the magnets are massive but I only have a 1"spacer on em and I they have about .5" of clearance beetween the magnet and the window. My rears are some shitty panasonics cause my Kappas got ripped off and I still havent decided what I want to put back there but they are 6.5" and they have no spacer. For the rears, if you want to put in 6.5 without a spacer, Infinity References or Alpine Type S's would work just fine. And being from Colorado, if you want, Ill do the install for you cheaper than anywhere else you could take it and my installs are warrantied cause I have my MECP Master certification still. Let me know :

I haven't decided on the drivers yet (will def. do components in front, maybe triax in back), but those two have been pretty high up on the list (money not being an object), however cost WILL be a factor too when I do this so I don't know what I'll use. I'm not after the absolute best system in the world, in fact, even a modest step up in SQ over the factory drivers would likely be sufficient here as our 4Runner is usually the family daily driver. It won't even have a sub in back... :nono: (so 6.5" all around would be nice)

I appreciate the offer on the install, but I'll definitely do it myself (for the money savings if nothing else). Changing out the drivers is pretty straightforward, and I've done quite a few full installs on my own vehicles in the past and several others for friends and family (my Scion T1807 install is stickied over in the Audio section here). However, if you can do something for pricing / getting the drivers, especially if you can get models I couldn't get a hold of otherwise, I might consider that (is Quality Auto Sound even around here anymore?).

I haven't had a reason to pull the door panels in the 4Runner yet, so I wasn't sure about the spacing. It sounds like it shouldn't be an issue unless I'm using a driver with a massive magnet (Like the Kappas).

Yeah it's been the same in my experiences with their sales staff.

But I agree with you on the whole idea of actually walking into a store, talking to someone in person, looking at the product, and walking out of the store with the product in hand. It not only makes the whole buying process more thorough, it's just more satisfying knowing that you don't have to wait for it to be shipped or anything.

Quality Auto Sound is still around but they're slowly dying just like Circuit City just did. Judging but what you're wanting I would say get the Infinity Reference series, components up front, 6.5" coax in the rear. If dont mind spending a little extra get kappas up front (not kappa perfects) the kappas have small enough magnets for the front. Do you have an after market head unit or did you install the scion head unit? are you planning on maybe running a small 4ch amp? cause even a factory head unit with a 4ch and kappa speakers :yummie:

Matt---You can't attribute rappers supposdly having more money to having records that were cheaper to produce. That sounds like BS to me. Lol. Maybe rappers just throw their money around like it's going out of style.

Im a producer/musician myself so I know what it means to be broke after an album sale or so. I may charge x amount but wont see anymore than $.50 per record sale IF it is reported sale blah blah blah....
