New T4R with brake question

I traded my wife's RAV4 for a 2012 4Runner yesterday. It's a nice vehicle and my wife is happy (that's the important thing).

While trying to park it in my garage for the first time, I noticed that there is quite a bit of brake pedal travel while slowly trying to get it in as far as possible without hitting anything in front of me. I'm used to brakes that are very firm with little travel to control slow speeds easily. Are the brakes on the 4Runner adjustable? Normally, I would just bleed the brakes with new fluid to achieve firm responsive braking. But this is a brand new vehicle.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what was the solution?

I'll call the dealership service department today to ask if any corrections can be made.

I traded at 2006 RAV4 for my 2011 4Runner and noticed the same thing. The RAV4 has very responsive brakes compared to the Runner. I considered getting different pads and rotors for the Runner, but after a while I got used to the longer pedal travel (and nosedive on hard braking) and have decided to wait until I need new brakes to change them out. Thinking about getting EBC YellowStuff pads and rotors.

As another recent T4R buyer, I have noticed that the brakes are the one thing that I am having the hardest time getting used to.

Yes there is what seems like a lot of pedal travel and the they seem to become disproportionately more effective the more I push down on the pedal. It is kind of hard to describe, but it seems like there is a point where only a very slightly more foot pressure gives a whole lot more braking. So it is not a consistent proportional feel, more like a sudden increase in effectiveness.

I have almost embarrassed myself a couple times in a panic stop/slow down that really was not necessary.

But I have to give them credit the brakes really do stop these things well. They just have an unusual feel that will take some getting used to.

Ya I've noticed the same thing but have gotten used to it. What still bugs me is the squishy sound the brake pedal makes when you apply the brakes. Drive me crazy sometimes.

I have the same squishy sound. I thought is because is a new car, but still have it after a month of driving. Do you guys think should I go to the dealer to take a look at the brakes or is this normal?

The "squishy" sound from the brake pedal is normal and has been discussed on this forum several times. There is no need to bother your dealer about it.

The service manager said he would be happy to have his shop foreman test drive it for me. He said he had another customer with a similar complaint and everything checked out fine/normal. So I expect to hear the same answer when I take mine back in. I'm surprised that Toyota engineered a brake system that can't possibly inspire confidence while parking the vehicle.

I have confidence while parking mine. I hit the brakes, it stops. Every time.

Yup mine are pretty much the same, coming from a Tacoma they are an improvement.

Came across This post in the complaint thread awhile back the poster was asked to explain but I never heard anymore. Would love to know if this indeed works and exactly how to do it.
