New Tacoma or 2nd 5th Gen???

We currently have a 2015 SR5 Premium 4wd that I've slowly started modding 3" lift, 33's, Gobi, BudBuilt Skids, etc. My other half has been driving it daily while I finish up my medical discharge from the Army under the premise that when I'm out she will get a 2016 Limited 4wd for her DD that we will leave stock aside from a rubber upgrade. Well now that pics of the new Tacoma have been hitting the web with mods attached I've quickly become attracted to the idea of picking one of those up for myself and modding it and leaving the 4Runner as it is and letting my other half keep it.
If we get a Tacoma then we will have pickup and an SUV which makes sense for a variety with household chores and the ability to use the bed versus the cargo area or a trailer with the 4Runner. If we get another 4Runner then we will have one nicely appointed stock vehicle for nights out, long road trips (better mpg), and it'll simply be easier for the other half on a daily basis getting in and out of in work attire (heels/dresses/skirts). My other half obviously wants her own 4Runner in the color of her choice and lower to the ground but she said if I want the Tacoma she's flexible and more than willing to keep the current 4Runner as her DD.

So what do you guys think? Is two 4Runners in one house hold of two people (for now, kids probably coming in a year or two) too much? Or would a Tacoma provide very little over what the 4Runner already does?

If you are spending that much money on a truck, you will get a far better deal on something bigger. This new Tacoma isn't much of an improvement, just some big changes.

Yes, a truck will provide additional utility. How much you'll have to decide since it wasn't a priority when you purchased the last 4R.

However I'd be 100% certain your other half is truly flexible before getting yourself another new car and passing your lifted, her non favorite color to her.

This, precisely. Like many wives, I suspect she's going along to please you. My take on your post is that this is more about you, and what you want. Not the best idea, IMO.

The 4R was bought, built, and for; YOU. Do not give her your hand-me-down in order to make the next choice also about you. Man up, it's her turn. Only a few woman want a built 4R, rather, would choose a nicely appointed LE.

My wife picks her car, it's the right thing to do.

Ask her if she truly wants a new vehicle or if she's happy driving the 4R. There's always a need for a truck.... orrrrr.... go get a trailer a second 4R and call it a day.

The 4Runner and Tacoma read like the realistic options.

The Tundra and Super Duty sound like your wish list!

Seriously though, my perspective, with home ownership, a truck is great to have for the honey-dos and home improvement. Also throwing dirty crap in the bed....kid's football gear, lawn stuff, etc.

I would mention that the full-size trucks are too much, PITA to park, PITA in traffic, but you live in Texas, so probably not as big a deal as it is here in So-Cal. Actually where I work, you can't even get a 4x4 Super Duty in the parking structure, the roof is too low.

I would only do the F-250/350 if you're going to actually need/use the capacity. Like if you're getting a toy hauler, camping trailer or boat.

I love Toyota but the Tundra is getting long in the tooth. If you can hold out a year or two, The Tundra and the 4Runner will probably be updated to the next generation.

At the end of it all, if this is going to be "her" car, just get her what she wants, so whatever she does not like about it, is not your fault!

That's the way I've been leaning but she keeps saying she's flexible and open to the idea. No matter how much she says it I still have this gut feeling that it's a trap in the future haha. I'm leaning towards keeping the 4Runner and getting her the Limited she desires and when we start to have kiddos in a few years I can reevaluate the situation and maybe get into a pickup then.

If you have already put in a lot of work upgrading the 4R then surely you enjoy driving that. Why not buy a new TRD Tacoma and leave that stock so it's easy for her to get in and out of and a smaller pickup so she feels comfortable driving it?

That is actually exactly what I plan to do. My wife enjoys our 4Runner a lot but we both would like a truck for flexibility in getting things done. I would love to have a 3/4 ton Ford but my wife would never drive that as it is just too big for her. But she is very on board with driving a stock Tacoma every day as long as it is a four dour one.

Just a thought... Trade current 4Runner and get Limited for her, then get Tacoma for you?

Can probably take off/sell your "build" parts and recover some of that for the Taco build.

I dont know what to buy -- new...

but i can tell you, having my old reliable (say what you want) F150 crew cab as a stable mate to my 4Rnnr is a perfect choice to me. To be able to throw anything dirty, anything that is oddly shaped, anything that needs air vs being in a closed in space, or anything that is wet, is wonderful to have. When i know things are going to be 'other', then the pick up is the way to go. for anything/everything else, the 4Rnnr is a nice change of pace. and with them both being solid rear axled, they have similar driving dynamics as well.

for your choices, i think the pick up would be the way to go.

the first time you'll have to load some dirt, or a grill, or furniture still in their boxes...you'll be glad you didnt have to do that with your Runner.
