New to 4runner - Extended warranty

I'm in the process of buying my first 4runner (5th gen - new) I'm wondering if I have to take the extended warranty : 7 years 120 000 km.

I sold my previous car after 7 years, so I plan to keep my 4runner for along time.

I new to this forum and from what I see with the other posts I will have a lot of fun with it xD

I fell for it at the dealer, figured the peace of mind was worth it especially with the cost of fixing modern vehicle parts. They offered it to me for $1899 but I got it for $1299 which was a few bucks a month for 60 months. Get them to discount it a couple hundred bucks and I say go for it. Fixing the XREAS or KDSS or NAV or HVAC is going to be very expensive so it made sense to me.

That's why I'm asking, because for peace of mind it would be good, I chose the trail edition, and the warranty is pretty expensive: above 2000$.

I got an 8yr/100,000 Toyota platinum warranty. It's always a good thing to get.

I also got the 8yr, 100,000mi warranty. I paid $1040 for it. You shouldn't pay any mor than that. You can actually purchase this warranty from any dealer, not just from the dealer where you make your vehicle purchase. Their is a dealer in kc that will give you an online quote, you just gotta find out if it's also valid in Canada.

Welcome to the forum. If you search "warranty", you'll find tons of discussions on this topic with lots of different opinions. I did by the 8yr /125K / 0 deductible warranty on mine, and paid around $1300.

The key thing is to call Jerry at Midwest Toyota or Troy at some other place (found in the Warranty thread) to get price quotes. Your finance guy is going to try to get big money, but if you walk in with a solid quote, your place will usually match it. Mine did.

My dealer offered me $1900.00, $0 deductible for 7 years/100k miles :hiding: It does state if I don't use it when it expires, the $1900.0 will be refunded to me.

I emailed Jerry and called Troy today to see what they can do for me

I am not positive, but I think they will only refund the prorated amount -- if you sell the car in 6 years, you will get only what is left (approx $250).

I got mine for about $500 (7/75, 0 ded). Make sure to check around -- some dealers will sell them at cost....

I agree with dpr...the idea of them refunding the $1900 seems too good to be true. I'd be reading the fine print on that one REALLY close. I think that folks like Jerry and the other dealers mentioned on here can keep you from over spending. The peace of mind knowing that everything is covered is nice.

Now if only there was such thing as a warranty that covered all those annoying little body dings without actually filing an insurance claim!! :cry2:

The 5th gen is the first vehicle that I bought an extended warranty on. It is also the most gadget equipped vehicle that I have ever purchased, which is why I chose to go with the extended warranty this time around. When I started thinking about the things like power seats, auto dimming mirror w/ camera, and the back-up camera itself, I realized that the cost of the warranty would pay for itself should any one of these things go out following the basic coverage. I have full faith that the vehicle will be mechanically reliable well past the factory warranty period. However, some of those electronic gizmos are a lot newer and I don't have quite the confidence in them as do a good Toyota drivetrain. Hopefully, I'll never need it, but if I do.......

It is a prorated amount indeed...when I sold my Land Cruiser, I didn't transfer the warranty to the new owner, instead got a prorated $500 back. Easy process.

The pro-rated refund is after dealer margin and anything paid out which includes any included oil changes etc. In Canada the margin is a massive amount (I had a truck written off in 2004 and the refund less than 2 yrs from purchase of the truck was tiny).

You can export a US Toyota to Canada but the US ECP is only honored by US dealers - Canadian dealers don't want to give up that big fat cash cow.

Just picked up my TE (KDSS) yesterday and they threw this option at me. After much thought with wifey at how the bells and whistle repairs would add up and cost we went for it. $1800 which sounds a little high compared to what you all paid for 7 year 100,000 mile. I guess after flying into the country buying this iPhone first and checking the forum would have been a better choice haha. My mom says I'm a sucker :lasercannon:, however she didn't drop the coin for this vehicle. Perhaps i just enjoy warm fuzzies but I'm in the good to go camp!

Same here. I think that's what I paid for mine, plus all the other crap they added on to it. I wish I would have seen this thread before I got it.

Oh well. This is only my third new vehicle, and I'll be 40 this year. One is my wife's car. So yeah, I keep cars for forever. Live and learn. Hopefully, I'll remember all this when I buy another one in a decade or so. LOL

FLORIDA BUYERS -- read this!

Thanks to this blog we just saved over $1500 (over half) on our extended warranty on a new 2011 Toyota 4 Runner. :biggrin2:

We found out that Florida is a regulated state - meaning that the cost of extended warranties are controlled but that also means that it makes them sky high. We were quoted $2800 (plus 6.5% tax) for 8yr/125,000 - $0 deductible on a Fidelity Warranty (that’s the Toyota Factory Extra Care Platinum).

Thankfully we did our research, found this site, and found Jerry Johnson....we paid $1399.00 (no tax) for the SAME EXACT policy. How??? Because Jerry is a Toyota Warranty Manager at a Toyota dealership in Kansas, where there are no regulations like Florida. Also, because I don’t live in Kansas, I am not charged state tax. That's a whopping savings of $1583!!! And it was so easy. Just email Jerry at [email protected] or call 800-530-5789. He will need to know:

Make/Model
Year
Miles
Date of Purchase
Name/Address
Phone Number/Email

He is super nice and very responsive. He actually called us on a holiday at 6pm to ensure that we received his email. We love our new car and our savings on our extended warranty!!!
