New to the 4runner world

hello,

I'm an avid 4-wheeler and have been driving Jeeps forever.

I want to buy a Gen 3 for a daily driver.

I've been reading all over and i cant find any definitive "this is how this works" info.

I want to lift the Gen 3 around 4' and slap some 33's on it for a DD.

nothing crazy, im not looking for offroad performance, i have a trailered jeep to do that with.

what im asking:

hows she drive on 33's?
will it dog too much?
is gearing an issue?

where can i find a good source for install directions and trouble spots?

where can i find a good streetable lift?

just looking for a point in the direction of some threads/websites to read.

Thanks!

3rd gen 4runners have a good reliable engine, but it is not exactly powerful. Anytime that you put on tires bigger than 31-32", you will be in the slow lane. Some may disagree with me, but i had an '02 4runner (3rd gen) and even with 32" tires, i felt the difference.

If you want to lift 4", then i recommend getting something else. Anything taller than 2" may cause problems with the front IFS. If this is going to be your DD (and trailer vehicle), then why are you lifting it to 4"?? Just keep it stock and get some good tires. You lifting it and then putting on 33" tires will just make trailering your Jeep harder.

I would also recommend Yotatech.com forum for more info.

What Thai said. :)

I did run my 4Runner at the dragstrip with my stock tires and then with my larger Nittos and I lost a tenth so it's not too noticeable but a 3rd gen isn't that quick anyway but it does great off road in stock trim especially if you have the factory rear locker in it.

im going to have to see how i feel,

this truck will NOT see offroad, nor will it be pulling my jeep on a trailer.

My grand is a good 4K.... no way

so what you're saying is i'd prolly need something like a 2"boost and maybe a 1" body to avoid suspension issues?

and that with 33's it might be a little slower?

are the body lifts hard to do? ive done a million wranglers, but never a 'yota.

If the 4runner will not see off-road, then why spend $$ to lift it and put big tires?? Looks only?

exactly... :bigok: ....

I am a truck guy, i like how the 4runner looks with a little beef

I have my wheeler that i beat offroad, so i dont (need) to wheel my DD.

generally speaking

Many guys on here run 33"s.

Body lift in combination with suspension lift can likely get you what you think you need.

My 5 speed actually feels a bit peppier since I went to 32s from the 265/70/16s stock size.

Body lift is likely no big deal to you if you have done Jeeps.

4crawler.com is Roger Brown and he is the master of the Yota body lift. 3 inches is the max for a Runner body lift and that gets a bit complicated.

1-1.5 inches is piece of cake or so I read....

Suspension lift is swapping out the stock springs for taller coils.

Likely no big deal for you if you have done it before.

If you like stinkbug rake-the butt end higher than the front-the 891s will get you that kind of height out back.

I am running them and be warned they are stiff as H-E- double toothpicks. What I like about them is they ride even better the more people and weight I put in the truck. 500 lbs in the back end and my truck is super comfortable.

Read Sonoran Steel website FAQ section of 96-02 Runners lifts and he has a lot of good info on there....

Just curious, but how come you want such a big lift for a daily driver?

4" lift and 33" tires are pushing it without powertrain mods, although there is a TRD supercharger to help out. I never lifted my 3rd gen, it was phenomenal offroad without any help. Pic included :)
