I'm possibly trading my fj60 for and 01 4runner limited. Has 175k on it. The water pump and timing belt was done 50k ago so I am going to do that when I get it.

Once all of the mechanics are sorted, I'll be looking to do a medium build on it in couple of months following the purchase and I was wanting suggestions. I'll be using it as a DD, and adventure truck up in MD while I'm stationed there, nothing insane but I will definitely need something capable and reliable.

Right now I'm thinking about doing addicted off roads HD bumpers and sliders, and then OME heavies front and rear, with 33" ko2's on some steelies, but I'm not set on it yet.

I'm looking for suggestions on the build right now. What are your favorite lift kits, bumpers, performance, and other various mods for comfort or storage. GO NUTS!!!

Also going to be building a tool kit for it, does anyone have a link to one on MUD or here, or have theirs written out? I searched and couldn't find one.

I love my 60 and hate that I need to sell it, so the idea is to build this rig so I have no reason to miss it. I will accept and appreciate any suggestions, advice, stories or jokes you have. I'll post updates as they come.

I haven't purchased it yet, I'm going to check it out but here is the potential rig. It looks like there is a slight lift already but I don't know what it is. Any advice on things to looks for?

Go ahead and do the Tundra brake upgrade.
You're welcome for the suggestion.

When the engine is cold take a paper towel and wipe behind the valve cover gaskets. They most commonly leak from there.
Ask about transmission problems.

Check the sticky....there is tons of info there.

Welcome looks like a good project. What part of GA are ya.

In Augusta right now. I'll be moving to MD in the next month though.

I've heard about doing the tundra brakes. Im not very knowledgeable about mechanics. Is that something I can do in my driveway with a basic tool kit? I did the pads and rotors on my fj and didn't have any issues, would it be comparable to that?

It's not too bad just swapping rotors, calipers and pads and cutting the backing plate for clearance there is a ton of write ups. . I can't give u any idea on how much improvement it does because I haven't done it. I'm weird and like things factory original.:):)

Tires are the most important purchase for your 4runner. I just got 265/75r16 ko2s and I am really happy with them. Lots of people on here are also happy with Goodyear Duratracs. The Tundra brake upgrade is pretty easy as far as mods go and worth it although I wouldn't put it ahead of tires or suspension. If I could go back, I'd keep my front lift to 2-2.5" instead of the 3" eibach coils but I still really like them.

Some preventative maintenance things to look at are bi-passing the radiator transcooler and replacing the lower ball joints.

Timing belt on '01 = every 90,000 miles

As far as suggestions on a variety of things look around at build threads for a start. There's more than a few of us building up our daily drivers for fun and adventure while maintaining decent road manners. The 'what did you to to your 3rd gen' thread has all sorts of interesting ideas, too. You'll get the fun of researching and driving to give you ideas and find out what you need to get you where you want to go.

A lot of people do the bypass. I just changed the radiator and I should be good for another 175k miles.

Its up to you though, and the bypass is an effective way to prevent the pink milkshake.

Welcome! I wouldn't worry about the timing belt for a while it's good for at least another 50k. Plenty of other projects to jump into though.

They've already been mentioned, but the transmission cooling and lower ball joints would probably be the first things I'd tackle.

If you're curious about the lift, you can measure from the center of the wheels to the bottom of the fender and see where you're at. To me that looks like it has at least a couple of inches of lift already.

Can anyone speak to his at all as far as quality goes? I've never heard of it before.

Welcome!

Looks like a cheap spacer lift, not the best solution. I wouldn't run one. A real lift with new coils and shocks is the way to go.

You've already got some sort of replacement CV axles in there as those aren't OEM.

She looks like a clean platform to start with though. I hope those wheels are the first thing to go though. Not my style at all. :thumb3:

Yeah the wheels are pretty ugly. I think he got them for his kid who was in high school and lifted truck with big rims were cool.

First upgrade will be some back steelies and ko2's

Any suggestions on a suspension kit?

Sonoran steel 1.2 kit (lc coils in rear, superb performance but will give you rake) or 7.2 kit (level with ome coils in the rear). Both kits come with all the ancillary goodies to compensate for the added height (diff drop, extended bump stops, etc). Very well thought out and tested kits and great service from Steve. I'm very pleased with mine.

For rock sliders you can't do better than stubbs welding hd-sko. Fabulous sliders and also an awesome guy to do business with.

I'll try to get some pics of my truck in here when I can.

x2 on Sonoran Steel. Seriously, 2. Put the 1.2 on my 96 in '09 and have liked it so much another is going on the 99. Both trucks are daily drivers and adventuremobiles. Steve is an awesome guy to do business with.
